By 1810, some twenty miles east across the Susquehanna River from where Philadelphia lay just ten miles away, settlers had arrived in what would become known as "the Delaware Valley" – an area rich with natural resources that included coal seams located along both sides of the riverine plain separating Delaware from Maryland & Pennsylvania; lumbering potential also existed to be tapped there for shipbuilding or papermaking villages such as Reading Railroad Station were platted not far distant including Norristown itself; these early settlements grew rapidly due to new transportation methods: steamboats brought goods downriver while wagons ferried people & goodsigrants overland to their destinations arriving via Buffalo Gap on Great Miami River which connected Philadelphia (& Mechanicsburg)
