The Norristown metropolitan area has a population of 317,000 people and is the third-largest in Pennsylvania. The community was founded by settlers from Northumberland and Westmoreland counties in 1795 as a small trading post on the Susquehanna River. It became an important manufacturing center during the 19th century with manufacture of goods such as shoes, saddles, flour, cheese, cloth and automobiles. In 1876 it was chartered as a city and reached its peak commercial activity with more than 1 million inhabitants before declining during the Great Depression. Today Norristown remains an important cultural and economic center within Bucks County while also becoming home to numerous research institutions including Stroudsburg University, Duquesne University and Temple University; two major airports; four shopping malls; five high schools; three colleges; one professional sports team (the Philadelphia 76ers) and one university (University Park).

In 2013, President Barack Obama announced his plan to reduce gun violence by executive decree. His plan called for increasing mental health resources and funding for programs that help offenders re-enter society after being released from prison or probation.

Norristown grew rapidly during the late 19th century due to its location near two railroads - the Erie Canal and the Atlantic Railway - as well as its natural resources such as coal and water. In 1887, Norristown became part of the newly formed Commonwealth of Pennsylvania; this gave it more autonomy than other towns withinSusquehanna County. The town's growth continued throughout World War I and into the mid-20th century thanks to its status as an agricultural center for southeastern PA. After World War II, however,Norristown's growth slowed due to declines in coal mining and mills that closed throughout much of northeastern PA. However, recent developments have begun to reverse these trends: NorristOWN has seen rapid gentrification since 2016 with many new residents moving into downtown from surrounding neighborhoods (which have remained largely affordable). These changes are giving rise to new businesses and restaurants along Elm Street which has become a popular place for nightlife activities such as live music or bowling alley games
