Norristown is a borough in the U.S. state of Pennsylvania, located in the Philadelphia metropolitan area. As of the 2010 census, Norristown had a population of 83,812. The name "Norristown" was first given to it by Captain John Norrington in 1798 when he and his family settled there after moving from Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. The settlement was named for John Norris, one of the original settlers. The town was founded on October 24, 1800 by James Armstrong and others as a reprisal for the burning of Wernicke's Mill in Chester County by farmers under George Washington as part of their retaliation against British troops during the War for Independence. Armstrong built a sawmill and store at what is now known as Armstrong Avenue and named the town after himself; thus Norristown became one of only two U.S.—and until recently alsothe only—towns in which both its namesake (Norris) and its current mayor (John Carney) were residents at once. In 1814, Orphan Asylum Number 2 was started here to provide care for orphans who were brought overland from eastern Pennsylvania into this country during President James Kapp's Executive Order No 10 “Forcibly Unlawful Detention” campaign against runaway slaves who had managed to escape from Union plantations near West Point or elsewhere in New York State or Canada: many such children were discharged or re-homed before reaching Philadelphia proper due to fear that they would be taken back into slavery if they reached our city limits! In 1834 Drury House School opened here providing education for girls up through grade 12; it closed in 1906 but has been preserved as an historical landmark nearby! The Norristown Light Railway ran through town from 1903-1906 with stops at Butler Avenue (now called University Boulevard), Main Street (now called Route 66), Market Street (now renamed Roosevelt Boulevard), Armstrong Avenue, Wright Road (now Route 25), Depot Road (later renamed Elephant Road), and finally Crescendo Drive!
