Norristown is a historic town in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 9,715 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Philadelphia Metropolitan Area. The town was founded by John Norristown and his brother James Norristown in 1795 as a smallonga village on the north side of the Monongahela River. In 1814 it became a borough; in 1828 it became an independent township; and in 1898 it became an incorporated municipality. The first white inhabitants of what would become Norristown were traders from Yorkshire who settled along the Monongahela River in 1795. They built wigwams near present-day downtown Norristown to trade with Native Americans and other settlers coming downriver for goods such as horses and maize. By 1800, about 60 families had arrived, many of whom engaged in fur trading operations along the river corridor. One early settler, Nicholas Westfall, operated a ferry across the river from present-day downtown to reach these trading posts. John Norristown arrived in 1796 and soon organized one of Pennsylvania's earliest tanneries. He also began developing land around what would becomeNorristown core – including areas now known as Easton Township (northwest corner), Willow Grove Township (southwest corner), North Huntingdon Township (southwest corner), South Huntingdon Township (southeast corner) and Pomeroy Borough (east corner). His familyowned business prospered until 1814 when they sold their interest to trustees under which time business declined gradually until 1840 when sudden growth caused them to again sell assets within 2 years resulting in another significant increase in property values over that period - this time reaching $2 million dollars within 10 years!
