In 1909, the Norristown Railroad donated to the town an old locomotive used by its predecessor company which had been scrapped years earlier but had been stored away until now! In 1916–1917 during World War I, Norristown served as a training ground for American forces during maneuvers around Philadelphia while portions of nearby Ambler Township were engaged in combat. Norristown is a city in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 11,491 at the 2010 census. It is the second largest city in Norristown County and the third largest city in Luzerne County after Allentown and Scranton. The two counties make up Norristown Township. Norristown was founded by George Washington and his troops during their Expedition to Valley Forge on November 8, 1777. The first settler in what is now Norristown was John Nixon, who arrived in 1778. In 1814, James Sennett erected a gristmill on the west side of Upper Greenville Creek. On February 10, 1815, three days after Andrew Jackson was elected President of the United States, he appointed John Dickinson as Secretary of State with power to establish roads and post offices throughout Pennsylvania under direct government control. On May 3rd, 1835 citizens of Philadelphia began to arrive in droves for Sunday markets that were being held every week at various locations throughout the town square (now known as Market Square). At that time Norristown had only a few buildings and no mills or grocery stores. The market ended on Tuesday evenings when it became too noisy for buyers and sellers to carry out transactions without shouting into each other's ears because there was no streetlight then; today's bustle may have been caused by electric lights which started being installed several years later! The arrival of new settlers led to an increase in manufacturing activities beginning with brick making around 1840 followed by steel production starting about 1850-1860 By 1870 there were fifteen businesses operating within one mile (1 kilometer) of downtown Norristiedom including five breweries: American Brewing Company (founded 1841), German Brewery Company (founded 1840), Artillery Brewery Company (founded 1846), Brown & Williamson Manufacturing Company (founded 1865), and National Brewing Company (founded 1865). This rapid expansion can be traced back to two factors: increased demand from immigrants coming through Lackawanna Railroad stations east of Philadelphia due to burgeoning industrialization along the Atlantic Coast Line railroad corridor; also increased competition from breweries based farther inland due to advances made by brewers like Samuel Adams et al., which led some entrepreneurs to open their own breweries outside Philly during this period In 1905 many residents decided that they did not want their large factory park located just south of downtown anymore so they formed a "revolt" against Industrial Park founder/director George Earle Smith who had wanted them annexed into Industrial Park while keeping much agricultural land adjacent - an annexation that never happened although Smith would later develop similar plans for nearby Quaker City . A fire destroyed much equipment used for brickmaking at American Brewing Co on December 4th 1902 leaving six men dead but it reopened only 2 months later using mostly immigrant labor from Russia who learned how do use fireplaces(and emigrated back home). After American Brewing went bankrupt its employees left town entirely looking for other opportunities... until 1907 when another brewery called Anchor Steam opened up next door Donnybrook Brewery employing local workers instead because district lines didn't allow factories near schools . Another major fire destroyed much equipment used for steel production at Anchor Steel Corporation on December 15th 1906 producing such widespread damage that company closed down permanently effective January 1st 1907 . Steel production returned temporarily thanks to contributions from neighboring companies but eventually stopped again due as increasing costs associated with technological advancements combined with rising unemployment rates caused closures across eastern PA between 1910-1920 .Steel production finally resumed fully north of downtown following an agreement reached between local business interests and Pittsburgh-based PPG Industries LLP starting February 1911 following fierce competition among small Bethlehem companies vying for market share amidst increasing global transportation costs .. Between 1912-1914 ten plants operated within one mile (.6 kilometers) of downtown Norristown including four auto plants belonging to General Motors Corporation – all situated northward off Third Avenue despite objections mounted by area businessesincluding Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Companywhich saw its fair share OFinvestmentinsteelproductionduring these decades .. businessmen Richard Mellon Sr., Edward Harkness Jr., Harry Kelly Sr., Charles Fenton Jr.(the fatherof modern dayPhiladelphia mayor Ed Rendell) coopted many high profile politicians during this time including future president Barack Obama ......
