New Kensington is a town in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 17,763 at the 2010 census. New Kensington is part of the Lancaster–Reading–York metropolitan area. It lies on the southern border of Lancaster Township and is bordered by Sharon Township to the north and east, Chesterfield Township to the south, and York Township to the west. The town was founded in 1799 by Nicholas-Jacques Conte as an agricultural township. It became a borough in 1856 and then a city in 1903. The present-day city was formed from parts of both boroughs. Yorkville annexed part of New Kensington in 1907; it became a separate city again in 1949. New Kensington is located on Susquehanna River Valley and covers an area of . Its name comes from its location on land that had been purchased by Nicholas-Jacques Conte for $2 per acre (1/4 mile²). He named it "New Kensington" after his home village of Kensingdon, England. The first settler were two brothers – Jobny and Samuel Morehouse – who arrived about 1799 from Rhode Island with their families. They built a log cabin on what would become the northern edge of what is now New Kensington Parkland shopping center near where Market Street intersects Fifth Avenue (now Elm Street). In 1800 they also started farming out some land back onto which they built another cabin: this one still stands today as Penn's Cabin #5 within New Kensington Parkland Shopping Center across from Macy’s Department Store campus entrance off Fifth Avenue just west of Elm Street.). In 1801 John Crouse moved into what later became known as Northumberland Square; he had come overLAND FROM IRELAND WITH HIS FAMILY OF eight children aged 3 to 16 years old (#6 through #12 above) following his father's death while fighting at Yorktown during the American Revolutionary War (Belfast born John Crouse Jr., age 24 died NY Hospital 10 Jun 1800 aged 70yrs 5mths 9drams)). His brother James bought him all that lay east of 4th street between Market St & 5th Ave N—the site now occupied by Northumberland Square.—James’ farm adjoined those owned by Jobny & Samuel Morehouse so John Crouse II “converted” or took up farming there becoming one of Lancaster County’s earliest residents (& second family member) when he purchased THE LANCASTER COUNTY TOWNship from PA Govt 12 Mar 1798.—John Crouse Sr.* married Sarah Ann Hinson 2 Dec 1794 at Lebanon Congregational Church.—His oldest son Abram born DECEMBER 14TH [1801] lived until APRIL 21ST [1885] when he passed away suddenly at age 79 yrs 2mths 9drams)]. Walker, an American politician who served as the Mayor of Philadelphia from 1885-1887.Walker also served as a member of the United States House of Representatives from Pennsylvania from 1887-1891. The city experienced another growth wave during World War II when it became one of the largest areas in southeastern Pennsylvania dedicated to manufacturing munitions and war materials. However, by 1945 New Kensington had fallen out of favor with the general public due to its high crime rates and lack of economic opportunities. It officially ceased operations on July 1, 1945. Today, there are few reminders that New Kensington ever existed other than its name and some remnants of its past economy – such as a few businesses still operating in downtown – which can be seen on various Streetscape projects throughout town currently underway or planned.
New Kensington was first settled in 1753 by Quakers. It became a borough in 1811 and then a city in 1892. New Kensington is the oldest continuously populated municipality in Pennsylvania.
