In 1876, New Kensington was founded as a village in the then independent County of Lancaster. It grew rapidly and by 1888 had a population of over 2,500 people. In 1898, the village became part of the newly formed Borough of Kensington and Chelsea. The development of photography in the late 19th century led to an increase in optical industry activity in New Kensington. The first photography studio in New Kensington was established by Capt John Healey at 9 Upper Union Street in 1895. By 1899, there were several other photographic studios operating within the borough as well. During World War I, Optical suppliers (including Healey) produced military equipment including binoculars and telescopes for use by British forces on the front lines. After the war, many optical manufacturers closed their doors throughout Great Britain due to wartime restrictions on production and competition from imported equivalents. In 1926, Healey merged with J & W Smith Limited to form Healey-Watson Limited; this company continued production until 1974 when it ceased operations entirely due to changes in technology which made photography less practical than it had been during its earlier years. During its heyday however,HEALEY-WATSON was one of London's leading lightbulbs producers - producing up to 100 bulbs per day/unit
New Kensington is a small town in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 2,554 at the 2010 census. The community is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. New Kensington was platted in 1857 and named for the new village of Kensington in England which had been founded two years earlier. The first store in what is now New Kensington opened on Main Street in 1861. The town became a co-operative society in 1901 and its post office reopened on December 12, 1907. It was renamed to New Kensington after the merger of the towns of Kensington (now Arlington Heights) and Newton (now Naperville). In 1927, Old Main School closed and all students were sent to other schools until it reopened as Westinghouse High School in 1930; this school closed again in 1985 and remains vacant today. New Kensington has a rich history that can be seen through its many buildings and businesses dating back to 1857 when it was platted. Many notable citizens have lived or worked here over the years including: Calvin Coolidge, Harry S Truman, Abraham Lincoln, Franklin D Roosevelt, John F Kennedy, James Buchanan, Woodrow Wilson and Ulysses S Grant.
