The Lugoff family first settled in what is now New Kensington Township on the banks of the North Branch Susquehanna River in 1778. In 1827 they donated land to make up what is now Lackawanna County and named it after their home town of Kensington, England. In 1906, Dr. George Applegarth and his wife Nellie moved from Buffalo to New Kensington and established a hospital there which became known as Eastern General Hospital (now Lankenau Medical Center). They also built three schools: Nassau Female Academy (1899), Ursuline Academy (1906), and Stroud School (1907). Lackawanna Coal Company operated a small mine near present-day Berlin until 1915 when it closed due to competition from other mines in the area. After World War I the company merged with Bethlehem Steel Company to form Bethlehem Steel Corporation and its operations continued until 1974 when it was sold to United Technologies Corporation for $2 billion. According to the 2000 census, New Kensington had 9,641 residents; however according to2010 US Census estimate that number has increased by 1,500 residents since then because of annexation by Erie-Niagara Falls metropolitan area

On October 26th 1899 President William McKinley delivered a speech from his home at 6100 Elm Street about how American industry could be Improved if only we encouraged manufactures within our borders On January 8th 1902 new legislation created the Pennsylvania Railroad Company with headquarters at 515 Third Avenue N (now part of Park Place). This company would later become Penn Central Railway
