The borough also has several parks including North Park which features a pond filled with alligators and stilts; West Park which is home to two large playgrounds; Midtown which contains several stores, restaurants, and nightlife; and Delaware Avenue which leads from Delaware Avenue Elementary School to New Kensington High School

The borough was established on May 15, 1853 from parts of Kensington and West Germantown. New Kensington was named for John N. Kensington (1762-1819), a member of the Pennsylvania General Assembly who served as secretary of state under George Washington in 1793-94 and 1800-01; and for his home, which had been previously called Newtown Square by colonists from Connecticut who built there in 1682. The present Borough Hall building was dedicated on January 24, 1874. In 1927 the name of Borough President Samuel Gomperswas changed to "New Kensington" in order to more accurately reflect its development as an independent municipality with its own economy and government According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of , all of it land. As of 2000, 5% (1,693) of the population were Non-Hispanic White alone; 8% (2,898) were Non-Hispanic Black or African American alone; 2% (641) were Hispanic or Latino; 1% (326)were Asian alone; 0.5% (253) were American Indian or Alaska Native alone; and 0.3% (193) were two or more races combined
New Kensington was founded in 1795 by John Forbes. It was a small village until the late 1800s, when it began to grow and expand. The town rapidly became a center of commerce and culture, with many famous residents including Benjamin Franklin, James K. Polk, and Abraham Lincoln. New Kensington also achieved notoriety as the birthplace of America's first black president, George Washington.
