New Kensington is a borough in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 11,811 at the 2010 census. It is located in the southeastern part of the city. New Kensington has been inhabited by Potawatomi and Algonquian Indians since colonial times. In 1802, John C. Frémont explored the area and named it after his friend and mentor General James K. Polk. New Kensington became an incorporated village on March 14, 1829, following the creation of Philadelphia Township by act of Parliament. The first post office was opened in 1831 in what is now Northumberland Avenue; today's Main Street served as its main thoroughfare until 1902 when it was extended to Southwark Avenue. During World War II, many American soldiers were stationed here before being sent to fight in Europe or Japan. One such soldier was Lieutenant Colonel George Sarton who fought with distinction during World War II as commander of Companies A and E (the 2nd Battalion) 109th Infantry Regiment (Airborne). General Patton made his headquarters here from December 1943 to January 1944 during Operation Market Garden which aimed to capture Arnhem Netherlands while Allied forces attempt to break through Nazi-occupied Belgium

New Kensington is a town in Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 3,868 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Scranton–Wilkes-Barre metropolitan area. The town began as a Quaker settlement in 1795 and was incorporated as a borough on February 14, 1854. New Kensington is located on the southern edge of theReading Township range that runs east to west and forms the eastern border of Lackawanna County. The first Europeans to enter what is now Lackawanna County were Robert Morris and his brother James who set out from Lancaster County in 1795 for what would become Pennsylvania. They found fertile land with good water supplies but also an unknown number of Native Americans who had lived there before them. In November 1800 they reached what would eventually be known as New Kensington after coming across an Indian name for their new location - Niantickehaghta or "new place". In early 1801 George Washington visited this site while leading Major General Forbes's brigade into battle against Cherokee Indians near Fort Pitt at Cumberland Gap in present day Westmoreland County (now Perrysburg). This event helped solidify New Kensington's reputation as a military stopover for visiting dignitaries on their way between Philadelphia and Pittsburgh during the War for Independence. On December 7, 1804, William Penn signed legislation creating Delaware County which included all of modern Lackawanna County including what is now New Kensington. This made it possible for residents living within DelawareCounty boundaries to vote not only within Delaware but also within Lackawanna county when they voted in township elections other than those held in the townships themselves. New Kensington became one of six townships formed from parts of Dover Township on March 1st, 1855; Dover being annexed by New Kensington four days later after a referendum passed by 3/2 majority vote reflecting disinterest among its residents in remaining part of Dover Township despite its large commercial sector which continues to exist today inside both municipalities boundaries although it falls outside any town limits or wards boundary). At incorporation, Newark Mayor John Jankowski articulated: "We have deliberately chosen this locality because we believe it offers advantages peculiar to itself." Newark’s growth following incorporation mirrored that seen throughout much of eastern PA – businesses grew rapidly due largely to cheap land accessible through open spaces along several miles (or rivers) running through the community making it easy access by wagon trainloads full of goods arriving daily from surrounding counties such as Lancaster and Yorktown Heights – making Newark one OF THE FASTESTgrowing CENTERS IN AMERICA during its early years! New Kensington is a small town in Berks County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 2,673 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Reading, PA–NJ–PA Metropolitan Statistical Area. New Kensington is located on the southern edge of the Reading Borough and is bordered by Potter Township to the north, Westminster and Westphalia townships to the east, and Northumberland Township to the south. The first settler in what would become New Kensington was John Cook who moved from Lancaster County in 1798. Cook's heirs donated land for a courthouse and school in 1802. The town was chartered on November 3, 1812 under the name of "New Castle" by commissioners David Brodie (a judge), James Hays (a state legislator), and John Denny (the owner of an inn). The town of New Kensington grew rapidly due to its location near two major railroads – one linking Philadelphia with Harrisburg and another connecting Yorktown with Pittsburgh – as well as its strategic position between two counties: Berks to the west and Bucks to the east. In 1838, when Philadelphia annexed Berks County, New Kensington became part ofPhiladelphia. In 1865-1866, during Reconstruction following Reconstruction policies which aimed to ensure African Americans were treated fairly after their emancipation from slavery in America occurred nationally through legislation including Emancipation Proclamation number 665 which stated "All men are created equal." Thus many black residents chose not to move away from areas such as Baltimore or Richmond where they experienced Jim Crow laws enforced by white supremacists throughout most of America during this time period because they felt that they had nowhere else to go.
