New Kensington, Pennsylvania is a borough in Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 9,717 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Philadelphia metropolitan area. New Kensington was founded by George Washington and John Adams on November 3, 1755 as "Northampton Township", within Huntingdon Township. On February 14, 1802 it became part of the newly organized Philadelphia County as "Holmes Township". On January 1, 1868 Holmes Township merged with Northampton to form New Kensington Borough. The first record of handguns being carried in New Kensington is from 1795 when patriot Major General John Forbes brought two pistols with him from Boston to teach local farmers how to use them against British forces during the French and Indian War. In 1812 Nicholas Purdy bought land in New Kensington and began to build a tannery which he named Purdy's Mills after his father-in-law Moses Porter who had also supplied guns for the revolution. This early gunsmithing tradition continued until about 1880 when most of the town's firearms were built by commercial armorers using interchangeable parts made in Europe or America. In 1870 James Fenton opened a grocery store on Second Street near what is now known as Main Street in what became known as Fenton's City Hall Annexe. At that time one half mile (one kilometer) north of what is now Centerline Drive there was an open square surrounded by trees where several public buildings including City Hall and Market Square still stand today - this square served as an early polling place for Pennsylvania state elections up until 1840 when voting booths moved to more centralized locations aroundPhiladelphia city limits). The days of handguns being used only for private purposes are long gone; many people here today carry handguns for protection both inside and outside their homes! On December 1st 1881, New Kensington became a Borough with its own government and police force under incorporation law #5270a-82 & Pamphlet No 1272 of November 10th 1881 which provided for an obligation to provide milk for city schools until they could be procured from other sources; it also established fire protection services within the Borough limits with Mr J F Baker being appointed as first Fire Chief
