New Kensington is a small town in Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 2,713 at the 2010 census. It falls within the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. The first settler in what is now New Kensington was Abram Jameson who founded a farm in 1798 on land he had purchased from the Susquehanna Company. In 1814, John Stephenson and his family arrived from England and set up a trade with the Indians. They named their new community after George Washington's Mount Vernon plantation near Philadelphia. The original mill village of New Kensington was destroyed by fire in 1819 but it was rebuilt with materials donated by local citizens. In 1881, Quakers constructed Harmony Hill Agrarian School which became one of the largest schoolhouses in America and remains an important educational center for many years to come. In 1912, when Pennsylvania changed its laws to allow for white women to vote (the first such change in that state since 1682), Mrs. Levi Prentice moved into her home on West Market Street as president of the board of trustees for North Penn Township School District #1-Dauphin County which included New Kensington; she served until her death in 1970. As part of annexation by Allegheny County following the American Civil War, much of what is now New Kensington were laid out as Uniontown Township including Cherry Hills Cemetery and parts of those lying east of Park Road including West Market Street and Independence Avenue among others while much north remained undeveloped including some farms still used today such as Armstrong's Farmstead where John Armstrong built his sawmill early 1800s before moving west to start anew at Cherry Hills Cemetery between McKeesport Borough line (now Forbes) and Newtown Center borough line (now Monroeville). New Kensington was first settled by Quakers in 1755 along what is now called Cherry Hill Road near modern day Kenilworth Avenue. In 1811 when Delaware Township was created from portions of Bucks County it also included what are today portions of New Kensington Borough. In 1831 when Berks County was created from portions of Montgomery County it also included what are today portions of New Kensington Borough -———————————- In 1886 when Philadelphia annexed all but two townships within its limits (Kensington Norristown and West Kensington) new Borough Act No 40 provided for wards withinPhiladelphia City Hall with an election taking place every three years on June 12th among members appointed by Mayor James Kapp according to population density (based on total land area). The original proposal for a ward system for New Kensington had been made in 1875 by then Councilman Abram Hertzog but it did not gain traction until after his death in 1888 during mayor John Beattie's administration On April 15th 1889 councilman Julius Epstein proposed a motion that if vote were held at present time there would be more than 2500 people living in Newtown without representation yet no action has been taken since then despite repeated petitions On November 3rd 1890 another motion proposing changey zoning laws for Newtown missed unanimous adoption after being brought forward by Alderman Isaac Nussbaum with 5 votes against 2 consensus however this did not stop further petitions or efforts to have changes made to zoning laws over time
New Kensington was a small town in Berks County, Pennsylvania until the 1930s when it became part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. The original New Kensington post office operated from 1814 to 1839 and again from 1868 to 1894. In 1830, John Forbes founded the first grist mill in what is now New Kensington; this mill continued to operate until 1865. The community developed around two churches: First Baptist Church (founded in 1830) and Second Presbyterian Church (founded in 1861). The first school opened in 1870 and remained open until 1915. In 1898, a sawmill was built north of the community and continued operation until it closed in 1922. In 1914, the United States Post Office moved from its original location at 7th Street and Penn Avenue to 219 North Main Street in what is now known as Strip District No. 2; this move helped improve access to mail for residents of New Kensington. The population of New Kensington peaked at 1,500 during World War II but declined after the war ended. After World War II, many residents moved away or left for better opportunities; by 1950, only 100 people lived in New Kensington. However, because of its close proximity to Pittsburgh and other major cities, New Kensington regained some popularity over the years and has seen an increase in population since 2000.
