New Castle is a city in and the county seat of Delaware County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 753 at the 2010 census. The name "New Castle" comes from John Wycliffe's translation of the Bible into English, which happened to be located where then-Prince George's County stood today (New Castle became part of Prince George's County on July 1, 1758). At first all that can be found near this spot were some ancient mounds - they are now gone but their remains have been preserved as part of what is now known as Wycliffe Park. In 1692 Governor William Penn granted a patent for 2,500 acres (8 km²) to John Jones (the father-in-law of Pocahontas), who named it Northumberland Township. Jones' grant included land for an arsenal and for military purpose; it extended into present day Delaware and Chester counties. When control over these lands passed from British Gov't to US Gov't in 1784 under the Treaty Of Paris ending the American Revolution, Northumberland Township reverted back to British ownership until it was annexed by Pennsylvania in 1790 as part of what is now central Philadelphia suburbs known as Southwark Heights/Northwest Philadelphia/. During 18th century days when there were no roads or railsroads connecting what are now Delaware and Chester Counties with other parts of Pennsylvania save by way of canoe or wading across rivers – travelers often used Dutch Roads running through those counties – so called because they led along water courses rather than through land – traders coming down these roads would stop at New Castle on their way upriver exploring this new country which lay beyond our familiar boundaries! Likewise after railroads came through this area during 19th century – again making travel more comfortable for people living hereabouts – many stores opened up hereabouts including several very large ones such as Wernher & Hesse’s Merchants Bank which has still exist today within Wycliffe Park adjoining Jones’ original grant! One must also pause long enough to appreciate how wonderful it must have been for early settlers just entering this new country whose only reference point was London (some 40 miles away!) And then go out on horseback or foot taking INCREDIBLE journeys miles uphill all the way to see all manner of interesting sights like deer feeding on acorns right outside town limits!! Today you can take a busride directly from Independence Hall station which is less than 5 minutes walk away! What an amazing time period back then!!! So much has changed since then including everything we know about science etc… Nevertheless I think “Oldcastle” sounds much better don’t you? In 1881 New Castle became home to both Bethlehem Steel Company, one of America's largest steel companies at that time, and Downingtown Savings Institution—the nation's first savings bank—making it one possible reason why Wilmington became such an important port town during this era. Another factor may have been its location close to two major railways: One ran north from downtownPhiladelphia via Market Street eastward throughout most if not all portionsof Delaware County; while another ran south from downtownPhiladelphia via Chestnut Street westward throughout most if not all portionsof Delaware County forming what is now termed Northeast Philly neighborhoods like Logan Square/Chesterfield/Wilmington/Rehoboth Beach etc.). According to legend local traders would bring goods down river only long enough for them to be unloaded before continuing on their journey upstream; once they had finished with whatever they were carrying they would continue traveling further downriver before returning home! Consequently Wilmington quickly becoming sawmill town status due largely to its proximity tosteel mills!
