New Castle is a city in Delaware County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 21,922 at the 2010 census. New Castle is the second-largest city in Pennsylvania and the third-largest city in Delaware County after Philadelphia and Wilmington. It lies on the Susquehanna River between Chambersburg and Reading. The town of New Castle was founded by George Washington in 1794 as part of a section of what would become Clearfield Township. In 1802, it became a part of Philadelphia. In 1825, it became an independent municipality under the name of New Castle Township. On November 5, 1850, it merged with Clearfield to form what would become Delaware County. The community that would be called "Newcastle" was founded by John Nicholson in 1793 as a small settlement on the banks of the Susquehanna River between Chambersburg and Reading. He named his new community for his ancestral home at Newcastle upon Tyne in England where he had been born some years earlier. Nicholson's grandson James Nicholson (1796–1856) added another street to the town site: Market Street which ran from Centerpointe Road north to Market Street eastward around present day Tryon Park Boulevard). By 1800, there were about twenty households living within one hundred yards of each other along Market Street near today's Penn State University campus; these early settlers brought their own cotton fields and stores into town during their early days as residents began clearing land for development around them."

New Castle was a small frontier town in what is now Delaware County, Pennsylvania until 1788. It was the site of skirmishes between British and American forces during the Northwest Indian War, and became an important strategic location after the Treaty of Paris ended that war. The town was abandoned in 1814 following the outbreak of the Mexican-American War.
