New Castle is a city in Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 30,715 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Delaware County. New Castle is located on the Delaware River, about 20 miles (32 km) north of Philadelphia and about 25 miles (40 km) south of Pittsburgh. The first European settlement in present-day New Castle Township was by French traders from Longueuil in 1683. The township was organized as part of Chester County on February 14, 1795. On July 1, 1837, it became part of Pennsylvania as a result of the admission into the United States of America of all but one county in that state – Delaware County – which remained an separate entity until 1889. In 1857-1858, new courthouse construction began within town limits and continued until 1865 when new courtrooms were built at the nearby White House plantation on Beaverdam Creek. In 1870-1871 Presbyterian pastor James Davidson started construction on what would become Christ Church Cathedral; this cornerstone was laid on February 28th, 1872 and finished three years later on May 25th after a long delay due to funding shortages caused by Reconstruction Era budget cuts. In 1886–87 two more courthouses were built: one at 9 North Main Street and one at 7 South Market Street. These buildings served as district courts for much of their careers before becoming Superior Courts when they were moved to separate locations within town limits in 1925-1926.
