In 1827, Philadelphia’s first optical store opened its doors. In 1835, New Castle became the second town in Pennsylvania to have an optical store. The business grew rapidly and by 1861, there were nine stores in the area. In 1865, a new building was built on Market Street in downtown New Castle and it served as the main store for many years. In 1895, a machine shop was added to the business and this allowed for increased production of optics products. By 1912, there were twenty-one stores in Delaware County and six stores in Pennsylvania. One of the most well-known optic businesses in Delaware County was The Optical Company which operated from 1926 until their closure in 1984. In 1935, Philadelphia's first municipal optical dispensary opened its doors at 9th and State Streets with the goal of providing quality eye care services to the people of Philadelphia. This dispensary was followed by Wilmington Municipal Court Health Department which opened its doors on North Broad Street in 1937. Other early dispensaries include those at 14th and Arch Streets (1938), 11th Avenue & Braddock Road (1939), 1st & Market Streets (1940), 5th Avenue & Jefferson Boulevard (1941), 4th Street & Market Street (1945) and 3rd Street between Sixty-Second and Sixth Avenues (1966). These dispensaries were all established to provide primary health care services such as vision exams, x-rays, screenings for cancer etc., through appointment only methods such as letter service or walk-in hours). With increasing prohibitionism throughout America during World War II due to wartime rationing policies, many optically focused businesses closed during this time period including The Optical Company which reverted back into appointment only operations after war relief programs kicked into gear again beginning in 1945 once more allowing for reopened shops! During the post war years numerous small storefronts cropped up all over Pennsylvania offering various types of eye care services like sunglasses salesmen selling contact lenses etc., but none quite equalled The Optical Company who continued their pattern of providing high quality vision products both through appointments only methods or retail storefronts across Delaware County! They did however go out of business multiple times throughout their long history including 1964 when they went bankrupt because they could not compete with larger companies that had returned from war production - something that has often been mentioned about opticians since their inception!

New Castle was founded by English colonists in 1718 as a port on the Delaware River. The first settlers were men from Sussex County and Maryland who had bought land from the Lenape Indians in 1684. In 1814, New Castle became an incorporated town under the jurisdiction of Philadelphia. The community was named after New Castle-on-the- Delaware, a castle built by King George II of Great Britain in 1718 to protect against French attack on his colony of Pennsylvania. Site of that castle are now downtown New Castle and parts of Northumberland Township and West Chester Township. The original inhabitants were men from Sussex County (now Delaware) and Maryland who had bought land from the Lenape Indians for £2 per acre (less than $10 today). They began to arrive in large numbers during the early eighteenth century because they saw this as an opportunity to gain access to valuable resources close toPhiladelphia – such as coal and iron ore – which were being developed at that time near what is now Wilmington, Delaware. But it wasn’t until 1814 when new residents started moving into what would become known as “Old New Castle” on Main Street between 7th and 8th Streets NW when things really started happening hereabouts! From then until 1840, Old New Castle served primarily as an agricultural center with people growing corn, beans, chickens, pigs and other livestock; fishing; harvesting lumber; manufacturing goods such as quilts and lace; or serving beerand whiskey at local inns along main streets like Market Street NW/Pennsylvania Avenue NW etc.– pretty much anything you could think of back then! And like I said….. everything back then! Just imagine if all those activities had continued up through today’s digital age…..oh my goodnesslah….well let’s just say we wouldn’t have any physicalevidence left us whatsoever 😉 Although agriculture has gradually given way to more modern pursuits over time (like tourism), there are still some interesting historical moments that occur each year that prove just how busy life once was hereabouts! For example: On October 12th every year since 1977 (except 1978), residents celebrate “Fairscape Day” by going out into their neighborhoods around town dressed up like characters from various nineteenth century American popular culture items including country singers Patsy Cline (!?)and Roy Acuff!, circus performers/stuntmen Gunther Von Helmuth theattered stunts while performing free concerts outdoors throughout their neighbourhoods!), playing jokes on fellow citizens (& sometimes even getting away with it!), selling handmade crafts & handicrafts made right HERE IN NEW CASTER!! What a fun day! Plus…..you can always count on plenty of folks coming out to visit during these days too!)
