In 1824, the town had 1128 residents and was incorporated as a borough by an act of the Pennsylvania General Assembly. The Borough School District No. 1 superintendent was John J. Henniker and Drury High School operated from that date until 1954 when it became part of the newly created York County Schools system; today's Henniker Middle School operates on land once used for Nanticoke High School (now Aliquippa Area schools). The town grew rapidly due to its production of coal—particularly for Pittsburgh's electric power plants—and began to lose population during World War II because so many people left for military service or overseas jobs. However, since then, growth has resumed with some new housing developments being built along Route 22 nearby as well as more businesses opening up in recent years including several petrochemical companies which have made Nanticoke a major manufacturing center over the past few decades (including Chappell Lumber & Paper Company) Today, despite facing some economic challenges such as high unemployment rates among younger workers and lack of job opportunities outside the manufacturing sector overall, Nanticoke continues to enjoy strong cultural ties with its neighboring communities especially Altoona which remains home to many local farmers markets as well as two small colleges/universities: Armstrong University offers programs leading to professional degrees while Carnegie Mellon University provides undergraduate majors with research opportunities within various industries

Nanticoke was a small, republican town in the Susquehanna Valley of Pennsylvania in the late 1700s and early 1800s. The community was founded by John Nanticoke, a Quaker, in 1795. It was located on the Susquehanna River between West Egg and East Egg. The community's name is derived from an Indian word meaning "safe place." John Nanticoke donated land to the town for its founding, and it became part of the United States during the Revolutionary War. In 1814, Nanticoke was incorporated as a borough. In 1827, it merged with nearby East Egg to form one municipality. Nanticoke had a population of about 520 in 1800; by 1860 it had declined to about 100 residents. Its decline began because farming stopped being profitable after1800 and people moved away for economic reasons rather than for religious reasons. The last resident died in 1961.

Nanticoke became a part of Pennsylvania in 1801 and soon became a major center for industry and trade.
