Nanticoke is a town in Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 3,824 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. Nanticoke was founded in 1798 by Captain John Cook and his wife, Anne Cook. The first store in Nanticoke opened in 1814. The town became an incorporated municipality on February 14, 1954. On July 1, 2009, it merged with the borough of McKeesport to form the new city of McKeesport-Nanticoke. In 1798, Captain John Cook and his wife Anne Cook founded Nanticoke after purchasing a small island located off the coast of Maryland for $5 per acre ($ today). They named their settlement after their home town in England—Nantucket—where they had resided since moving there from Rhode Island two years earlier. By 1800, they had built a log cabin and started trading with local farmers who grew crops on their island and along the shorelines of Pennsylvania's Monongahela River. In 1814, when Williamsburg County was created from parts of Allegheny and Westmoreland counties within Pennsylvania's borders,[1] Captain Cook donated land to make up what would become Nanticoke Township (then known as "Cookstown"). On February 14th 1954 – following protracted negotiations between Mayor Alonzo Sarno and Borough President Clifford Durkin – Nanticoke Township merged with McKeesport-Nanticokes Business Park which enjoyed tax breaks due to its proximity to Steel Valley Airport. Nanticoke was a small town in Pennsylvania that was once an important trading post and early settlement. Nanticoke rests on the Delaware River, about 25 miles southeast of Philadelphia. The first European to visit the area was Giovanni da Verrazzano in 1524. In 1764, George Washington visited Nanticoke and noted its strategic location for trade with the French and Indian War fought nearby. The town declined after the Revolutionary War, but grew again after settlers brought over new technology from England in the 1800s. Today, Nanticoke is home to a diverse population of people who are engaged in various economic pursuits.
Nanticoke is a borough in Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Scranton–Wilkes-Barre, PA Metropolitan Statistical Area. Nanticoke was laid out on November 4, 1784, by Nicholas Nicholson and erected into a borough by an act of the Pennsylvania General Assembly on December 10 of that year. The original town site was located between Easton and Newtown and extended along what is now Northumberland Avenue east to Westmoreland Avenue south to Sixty Mile Creek. The first school in Nanticoke opened in 1810 and was known as "Nanticoke Academy." In 1824, the cornerstone for what would become Scranton's first brick courthouse was laid in what is now First Street and Park Avenue. The courthouse became home to various courts until it moved to its current location on Market Street in 1867. In addition to its courthouse duties, the market building served as a court house from 1798 until it burned down in 1865. On October 9th1784 US troops under General Anthony Wayne were skirmishing with Native Americans near present day Moon Township when they encountered German traders led by Johann Georg Kappeler numbering about 20 men from Frankfurt am Main who had also come overland from Philadelphia via Trenton intending to trade goods with the Indians. At about 2 pm US troops fired upon these traders killing 3 Germans (2 sons of Johann Georg Kappeler) and wounding another 4 including one fatally shot through the heart while lying prone on his back within 100 yards of where he had been trading goods with his father’s band of warriors! This event forever changed America's relations with Native Americans as this battle left 3 families dead & numerous other injuries inflicted upon many more! Aftermath: $3 million paid out indemnity & great resentment against Great Britain among colonists
