It is part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. Nanticoke was founded by Ephraim and Rachel Chandler in 1751 as a small community on the Susquehanna River. The first settler in what is now Nanticoke was Samuel Worthington, who built a log cabin and named it after his birthplace in England. In 1827, when York County became part of Pennsylvania, Nanticoke became its seat. The original courthouse and jail were built here between 1830 and 1836. In 1865, during the American Civil War, General Ulysses S. Grant ordered General Joseph Hooker to march through York County on his way to Gettysburg. As they entered Nanticoke Township from Cumberland County, hooks brigade encountered a Confederate force led by Colonel John Buford which had been hidden in woods near mile post 9 on the road to Gettysburg. A skirmish ensued which resulted in about 30 Union casualties and several Confederate dead or wounded; however no damage was done to either side beyond minor loss of property (the only battle fought within York County during the war). In 1925, construction began on what would become Penn Central's Erie Railroad line; this greatly increased traffic into and around Nanticoke from surrounding towns such as Buttersville and Monaca Junction along with larger cities like Philadelphia and Buffalo across the Susquehanna River valleyously- so much so that by 1928 there were more people living in Pittston than in any other town within York County save for Newburgh (and even then only because Pittston had been granted city status). By 1935 Penn Central had withdrawn all services east of Huntingdon Valley; but due to heavy industry growth throughout western PA during World War II Penn Central again tried to expand their lines into eastern York County by buying land at Spring Grove Dam adjacent to present-day Bethlehem Steel Company where they established an auxiliary line known as "The Horseshoe" which served as back-up service for both main lines while also providing access to steel production at nearby plants such as Alcan Aluminum Works (now ArcelorMittal) downriver from Bethlehem Steel Company until 1958 when both lines were abandoned completely due to economic sanctions against Germany following World War II . Today most residents live outside of town proper with some commuting into town for jobs at local companies or universities; nevertheless there are still many items that are available only within walking distance from home including grocery stores (Aldi/Sobeys), pharmacies (CVS/Pharmacy Max), libraries(York Regional Library), bars/restaurants (Pitchers Pub & Grill), movie theaters (Cinemark Stadium 16),historic sites like Spring Grove Dam where battles took place during America's Revolutionary War while also enjoying day trips away from town such as West Chester downriver or Easton upriver where you can visit mills belonging to local farmers or see samples of lace made right here on site!
