Nanticoke was founded in 1768 by colonists from Rhode Island as temporary housing for workers on the Monongahela River and its tributaries. The name "Nanticoke" comes from the Mahican word nantucket (?), meaning "a place where men can build their homes." Another theory suggests that it may be derived from an Indian phrase meaning "place where I will fish hereafter." In 1768, when George Washington's army invaded America via water convoy, he journeyed downriver to Fort Duquesne to surrender to General Forbes. As he disembarked his troops at Monongahela Heights ("the heights"), they erected a shelter onshore called Nanticoke Point, which later became known as Independence Hall because it served as headquarters for several months while Washington negotiated with Forbes. Between 1768 and 1800, more than 2 million people passed through Nanticoke during those years; many of them worked on the river or its tributaries south of town. By 1800, about 90% of all traffic along the Susquehanna had stopped because of development upstream along both sides of the river: mills east of town opened up acres of land for farming; coal seams were discovered near present-day Steel City; steel mills started up in Butler and Findlay counties; steamboats began operating on both sides of the river; and transportation improved so that goods could be shipped downriver rather than being transported overland like earlier generations had done. Today's economy is based largely upon manufacturing: All three major employers within 1-mile radius are manufacturing companies: Alcoa (Allegheny), United States Steel (Indiana), and Jeld-Wen Inc.(Pennsylvania). These companies contribute $9 billion annually to Allegheny County's economy –twenty percent more than what services bring in!
