Nanticoke was founded by German immigrants in 1795. The townspeople were the first Europeans to adopt a system of government under which a mayor and twelve constables governed the town. Despite this decline, Nanticoke remained an important community until its incorporation as a borough in 1881 following a referendum vote by residents over whether or not to become an independent municipality. From 1886 until 1959, Nanticoke served as day-to-day local government for all of Butler County save for Westmoreland Township which functioned under state government control since that time until being annexed into Butler County in 1959. The population of Nanticoke peaked at 2,255 in 1940 before declining gradually over the next few decades due mostly to natural causes such as changes in lifestyle habits among nearby suburbanites caused by World War II (the war increased industrial production around Pittsburgh), births out of wedlock (a result of low birth rates among rural families), and aircraft accidents which took away jobs from locals manufacturers during World War II and also drove down prices for goods exported from Pittsburghese factories via railroads into eastern Pennsylvania. The Nanticoke area of Pennsylvania was once home to a thriving community called Nanticoke. The town was named for the Sassenach River, which flows through the area. The river served as a natural boundary between the Shawnee and Lenape tribes. In 1684, the Dutch founded Fort Nassau on the Sassenach River in what is now Nanticoke Township. After their defeat by British forces at Saratoga in 1777, the Dutch withdrew from North America and their remaining settlers were forced to leave Nanticoke behind. In 1807, land grants were made to farmers in northeastern Pennsylvania who would use it to develop farming settlements. One of these farmers, John Dupleix, purchased 640 acres of land near present-day Nanticoke Township in 1810. Dupleix built a house on his property and named it Nanticoke after one of his ancestors who had settled thereabouts in 1667. By 1812, over 100 people lived in Nanticoke Township and many more located around its periphery including: West Branch (now Centre), East Branch (now Clearfield), Canada Creek (now Clinton), South Branch (now Greencastle), Lebanon creek (now White Sands) and Bucksburg creek (present day Erie). Nanicoke developed as an agricultural center due to its fertile soil and easy access to water supplies. Agriculture became an important part of local life with residents using farmland for crop production, livestock raising, hunting/fishing and trade with other parts of New England. This prosperous community also boasted a schoolhouse, churches and businesses that attractedavers from nearby towns such as Bethlehem and Scranton. Despite this success, however, development stalled during the early 1800s because immigrants seeking opportunity instead chose more hazardous lifestyles than those available in rural areas outside Philadelphia or Pittsburgh. After years of hard work by residents and entrepreneurs alike, however, progress began again during the late 1800s when mills started up throughout northeast Pennsylvania due to new transportation technologies brought about by railroads developments such as the Erie Canal & James Kapp’s Transportation Company - all while prices for corn continued to rise consistent with increased demand from European markets caused by war efforts abroad coupled with building changes within U S society including women becoming householders across class lines starting around this time too! This period also saw large-scale population growth alongside infrastructure investments like schools & roads being improved making today’s “Breadbasket” Regionarguably one of most culturally rich regionsin North America!
