On November 8, 1775, the town of Nanticoke in western Pennsylvania was stormed by British forces under General George Washington. The town's only store and arsenal were burned to the ground and all its guns were taken. The townspeople rebuilt their stores and arsenal. In 1847, Nanticoke was chartered as a borough in Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania. On December 12, 1851, it became a city with a population of 30 residents. Nanticoke's first gunsmith was Nicholas Pillsbury. He built his shop on Market Street in 1777. Pillsbury continued to make all types of firearms including revolvers and shotguns until 1834 when he retired from business at the age of 90 years old. His son-in-law John Fenton started making pistols in 1840 and continued until 1886 when he also retired from business at the age of 80 years old. His two sons operated their father's business until 1906 when they sold it to Wm Hargrave who ran it for many years before selling it to Mr Kapp who operated it for many more years before closing it down in 1984. Nanticoke is now home to an outdoor mall called "The Commons" which opened in 1985 and features a variety of local businesses as well as several historical buildings dating back to pre-war days including the courthouse which is still used today as part of the police department's headquarters complex

In 1840-1841, Nanticoke had a total population of 12 inhabitants and 3 traders. In 1851-1852, Nanticoke had a total population of 10 occupants and 2 traders. In 1861-1862, Nanticoke had a total population of 8 inhabitansation and 1 merchant. In 1871-1872, Nanticake havera an original village with 9 houses on Main Street which has since been demolished to make way for new development near the Susquehanna River

Nanticoke has a rich history dating back to 1795 and is home to the first settler in what is now Lackawanna County. The town was named for Nicholas Nantz who led an exploration of the region in 1795. Nanticoke became a Borough on December 1, 1873 following the merger of several other towns in Lackawanna County. The town's namesake Nicholas Nantz played an important role in earlyNanticoke history by leading an exploration of the area in 1795 which resulted in his discovery of a small body of water known as "Huck Finn" or "the Delaware." This donation made land available for purchase within what would later become Nanticoke Township and helped spur development within this rural community. In 1810, John Fenton purchased 5 acres (20,000 m²) within present-day Nanticoke Township from Nicholas Nantz for $5 ($140 today). In 1865, when James Matson located a sawmill on Bucks Creek near present-day Allentown, he decided to build it into a larger mill and name it after his ancestor James Matson who had founded that mill back East in 1775. After years of construction and many false starts, the new mill finally began production during 1868 and soon became one of the most successful mills operating within central PA at that time. Today all traces of JMP's old mill have been removed including its massive dam which still forms part Of Parkestone Dam State Park Some 25 miles NorthEast Of downtown Allentown From these beginnings until 1963 when manufacturing shifted from woolen products to jeans and other clothing items due to advances made by plastics technology during that time period - much like today - little has changed about day-to-day life hereabouts except for changes with technology... although some things have stayed constant such as elections taking place every five years instead of every two years like they do now
In 1794, the Nanticoke Company was founded by Colonel George Washington and his brother-in-law Caleb Porter. The company became a leading player in the manufacturing of hats and other headwear. In 1818, the company merged with two other companies to form the Pennsylvania isthmus Manufacturing Company. This company produced hats and other headwear until it closed its doors in 1865. In 1827, General Robert E. Lee visited Nanticoke and ordered a shipment of hats from the company. A few years later, General Ulysses S. Grant went to Nanticoke to purchase supplies for his army during the American Civil War. A majority of Nanticoke's businesses died during prohibition in 1919, but some surviving businesses continued operations until 1930. After prohibition ended, most of these businesses closed again due to economic decline over the next several decades.
