The town became a borough in 1846 and then an incorporated town in 1898. Nanticoke's downtown is one of the few remaining examples of 19th century architecture in the Greater Philadelphia area. It has been designated as a National Historic Landmark since 1966. A number of stores and businesses remain closed today but are still popular tourist destinations due to their historic significance and local fame for their namesake product: apple cider vinegar
