Nanticoke, Pennsylvania was founded in 1756 by Captain John Nicholson. The town was named for Nanticoke Creek, which ran through the area. The first settler in Nanticoke was Nicholas Goodrich. In 1802, the town had a population of 81 and a land value of $5,500. By 1810, the population had grown to 304 and the land value to $25,000. In 1814,Captain James Sheehan established a wharf on the Raccoon River in Nanticoke after being shipwrecked there. He built two houses and made some crops. By 1818, Nanticoke had a population of 568 and a land value of $50,000. In 1830-31 Captain John Purdy set up a sawmill at what is now known as Bridge Street in Nanticoke. This mill produced lumber until it closed in 1906 due to technological advances. After Captains Purdy's death in 1830-31, his son James took over operation of the mill until it closed again in 1911 due to economic difficulties). On October 11th 1861 there was an attack on Fort Delaware by Confederate forces under General Robert Ewell that resulted in three deaths including one from an accident with a musket while firing from within Fort Delaware’s walls (the fortifications at this time were not manned by troops). During World War II when Nanticokeshire was part of Montgomery County there were machine gun nests located here called "The Girders"

In 1812, General Andrew Jackson's army came through Clearfield County and stopped at Nanticoke. A store was set up and goods were bought and sold. The townspeople donated land to make way for a courthouse and jail. In 1835, John Fenton founded the college at Pittsford in New York state, teaching students from what is now Pennsylvania. He sent two students to teach school here as part of his plan to establish an American university west of Philadelphia. When Pittsford closed its doors in 1839, many students transferred here including James Birney who became president of Penn State University (now Penn State University Park). Nanticoke grew rapidly during the 19th century due to industry such as tanning and lumbering; however during World War II it lost much of its significance when nearby factories shipped their products overseas instead of coming to Nanticoke for assembly because war production exempted such businesses from paying taxesability rates under wartime regulation (see also: Pittsburgh-area bombing). However since then there have been several attempts by Nanticoke officials or developers to resurrect its former prosperity thanks to various initiatives like increasing tourism visitation numbers which has led to more retail development around town while preserving some historic buildings In recent years there has been interest among local governments throughout NortheasternPennsylvania in annexing much of Westmoreland County into their townships because of similarities between these counties' demographics - high percentages of Polish immigrants (both legal residents and non-legal residents), relatively low unemployment rates within each township boundaries compared with other areas across NortheastPennsylvania (especially along Delaware River Valley), large number of Polish language speakers within each township boundary - all indicative that these areas may be potential future economic strongholds for both cities/townships as well as rural villages dependent on those cities/townships for employment

The population peaked at 10,000 in 1945 but declined gradually over the next few years due to military operations and postwar desolation. At its peak in 1951, Nanticoke had only 2200 residents remaining; however, this figure has since grown significantly (currently standing at over 3300) thanks to various aspects of modern day life such as commuting into larger cities or Internet access which have assisted in spurring economic development throughout the community.
