Nanticoke is a town in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Reading/Allentown– Falling Waters area. The first European settlement in what is now Nanticoke Township was made by John Neilson on October 15, 1749. He and his family were the first Europeans to settle in what would become Nanticoke Township. In 1807, George Stephenson founded the town of Scranton in Lackawanna County and began to build railroads through what are now parts of Luzerne and Lackawanna counties. By 1830, over 100 people had settled in Scranton and it quickly became one of the most important railroad towns in Pennsylvania. In 1848, Nanticoke Township was created from parts of Lackawanna and Luzerne Counties to help spur development along the new Erie Railroad line. The township was renamed after General Lafayette during World War II as part of patriotic programming to commemorate America's military leaders who had served throughout World War II. In 1951, when Interstate 95 bypassed downtown Reading entirely and entered into rural areas of northeast Pennsylvania via Route 222 (now Routes 322 & 122), many residents decided that they would rather live closer to their jobs than continue living east of I-95 . As a result, much development took place within boundaries which once defined Nanticoke Township including Ankeny Heights (later Ankeny), Beaver Dam Hills (later Beech Grove), Clearview Farms (later Clearview Manor), Deer Park Centennial Park (later Deer Park Cemetery), Elmwood Springs (later Elmwood Springs Village Center), Georgianna Heights ( later Georgianna) and Muhlenberg Heights ( later Muhlenberg). On July 1st 1959, portions of Clearview Manor outside of village center were annexed into neighboring Beaverdam Hills while all other village center annexations took place on July 1st 1961 including those for Ankeny Heights adjacent to Clairton Borough; Clearview Farms adjacent to Springettsbury Borough; Deer Park Centennial Park adjacent to Lebanon Borough; Elkwood Springs adjacent to Bethlehem Borough; Georgianna Heights adjacent to Monroeville Borough; Muhlenberg Heights adjacent to Allentown borough Nouvelle Ville also annexed by Allentown on October 2nd 1957
