By 1824, Murrysville had a small population of around fifty-five people. The first store in Murrysville opened its doors in 1829 and soon became one of the most popular businesses in town. In 1840, a school was built and operated for several years until it was replaced by an academy in 1861. A post office was established at Murrysville in 1853 and remained open until 1865. In 1878, local citizens elected Atherton as their first mayor and he served until his death in 1886. In 1889, John Fenton purchased the business from Atherton's widow and continued to operate it until his death in 1922. Over time, other merchants followed Fenton's lead and the store ceased operations completely on November 6th, 1951.

The Murrysville post office was established on October 20, 1815, and served until its closure in 1935. The town was named for John Murry, an early settler. It originally consisted of only a few houses and a schoolhouse. In 1870 the town had a population of 375 and it grew to 1054 by 1910. By 1925 the population had decreased to 876 due to World War I-related layoffs and various other factors. However, growth resumed in the late 1930s as coal mining boomed in nearby Bethlehem Township. In 1940 the population reached 922; however, another decade of decline followed as industry withered away and most residents left for better opportunities elsewhere. By 1990 there were still just 376 residents living in Murrysville - a fraction of what it once was but still significant given that the median household income is $62,500 now compared to $92,000 when he first settled here in 1815 First settlement: John Murry arrived July 12th 1815 from Scotland with his family consisting of his wife Susanna (née Pill) (age 27), their 2 children Alexander (age 11), Margaret (age 8) and Annabelle (age 6). They landed on Beaver Island on Long Island Sound near Kingston before moving ashore on New York Bayou about 4 miles from where they later built their home which they named "Murry's Landing". On October 20th 1835 John set forth from Mellon Landing with 3 others including James Smith who became one of America's earliest missionaries to Cuba under license from Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian I On December 15th 1840 John married Mary Ann McNaught who came over with him along with her sister Lillie McNaught Mayo They raised 7 children born at "Murry's Landing" including 5 daughters namely Sarah Ann McNaught Morrissey born May 6th 1845 at "Murry's Landing", Eleanor Jane Morrissey born November 26th 1850 at "Murry's landing", Anna Belle Morrissey born January 17th1853 at "Murry's Landing", Agnes Louise Morrissey born May 16th1857 at “Murry’s Landing” & Catherine Elizabeth Morrisey Born September 14TH 1865 At “Murry’s landing” all living together until her death aged 82 years old on Sunday APRIL 21st 1989 also known as Mrs Bessie McMullen John died Dec 3rd 1830 age 46 after being struck by lightning while working outside

Murrysville, Pennsylvania is a town in Butler County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 5,527 at the 2010 census. The first European settlers in the area were Andrew and John Murrys who founded the town of Murrysville on December 12, 1784. The original name of the town was "Newburgh" after Newburgh in New York State. It was renamed to Butler County on February 3, 1814 as part of a statewide change in county names made by President James K. Polk during his presidency. In 1892, cotton gin pioneer John Foust built what is now known as Foust's Gin Works on the north side of Main Street in Murrysville. In 1911, another cotton gin pioneer named Hiram Sibley opened his Sibley Cotton Gin & Feed Mill on the south side of Main Street in Murrysville which became one of the largest mills in Butler County and remains so today. In 1924, two brothers named Edward Hinton and Augustus Muhlenkamp purchased land east of Route 309 near what is now called Old Bethlehem Cemetery and began building what is now known as Hinton-Muhlenkamp Stadium which served as home field for Butler University baseball from 1926 to 2006. During World War II (1939-1945), many soldiers soldiering with the US Army garrisoned at Camp Campbell located along present day PA 309 west of town served their country through various manufacturing/service projects such as making bulletproof vests and tanks for General Motors (GMC). The post office closed within days after Japan bombed Pearl Harbor on December 7th 1941 causing widespread destruction including much damage to infrastructure throughout America including Murrysville which lost its mail service provider just eleven days later when Mack trucks delivered sacks full of mail to residents instead! All contact between residents and their local post office ceased abruptly with no forwarding instructions given until well into 1945! This left many citizens relying upon oral historySurviving veterans recall that “It seems they just quit sending letters because they didn’t have any stamps or anything like that… It must have been pretty bad because we used to be able to send packages off without any trouble ever!” On October 1st 1959 new shopping center opened up adjacent to old schoolhouse across from cemetery - it would eventually become known as Westmoreland Mall
