Murrysville, Pennsylvania is a town in Butler County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. The first gun target in Murrysville was established in 1868 by Major General John J. Pershing when he was stationed there as commander of American forces during the Mexican-American War. The first shooting range in the town was established by Captain George Smeaton and his son Benjamin Smeaton in 1875. Captain Smeaton had purchased land on which to build a Shooting Range and Store House on North Main Street near PA Route 12 (now Boulevard). In 1895, ownership of the store passed from Captain Smeaton's son to Sam Hargrave who ran it until 1918 when it passed to his son Aloysius Hargrave Jr., who continued running it until 1953 when it became inactive and sold for $25,000 to Edward Fenton who reopened it as an air rifle range which still operates today with over 350 shooters from all 50 states using its 7 targets covered in .22 LR ammo!
