The first firearm sight in Murrysville was a wooden firing platform that was located on Main Street. The platform was used by local farmers to take aim at their cows during milking process. Eventually, this shooting platform became obsolete and was replaced by a metal frame in 1868. In 1892, a new rifle range was built in Murrysville which served as the primary source of fire for many local shooters. The range continued to be used until 1978 when it closed due to budget cuts within the government. After the closing of the rifle range, local gun enthusiasts soon began using other locations within town for their firearms needs. One such spot was an old post office building which had been converted into agun shop back in 1934. This business offered customers an extensive selection of firearms including pistols and rifles. Over time, this location became known as “The Gun Shop” because of its wide variety of weapons available for purchase. In the early days of American gun ownership, sights were a scarce commodity. Many rifles and pistols were only able to be equipped with aiming assistants such as dogs or reticules. The first sights made for firearms were adaptations of traditional animal sighting devices. The most common type of sight was a convex mirror, which would reflect the image of whatever target was being aimed at onto the barrel ahead of the shooter. This type of sight was used on muzzle loading guns and muskets until around 1820 when a more efficient design became available, called an adjuvant (or "adapter"). An adapter is a metal or plastic plate that is screwed into place on either end of the barrel leading from the breech to the chamber. It sits in between the barrel and stock, and has two viewing ports: one facing forward and one facing rearward. When it's time to take aim, simply put your hand over one viewing port and squeeze while looking through the other; you now have exactly what you need to see on your target in that particular direction. There are numerous adapters available on different types of firearms, so finding one that works perfect for your firearm can be difficult but not impossible!
