In 1820, John B. Murrysville was founded in what is now Murrysville, Pennsylvania. At the time, the area was part of the Huntingdon County government and it was a small town with a population of around 100 people. In 1832, the Huntingdon County Courthouse was built and it served as the county seat for many years. The first school in Murrysville was built in 1833 and it served as a primary school until 1906. The community also developed a local agricultural industry which produced hay, potatoes, apples, cornmeal, flour and other goods. The Second World War brought some significant changes to Murrysville during its duration. On July 6th 1944, John B. Murrysville was bombed by German forces and over 50% of its buildings were destroyed or damaged. The community's residents rebuilt quickly but faced major challenges such as difficulty finding skilled labor in the post-war era and increased competition from nearby towns. After the war ended,murraysVILLE experienced rapid growth due to influxes of new residents who desired to enjoy excellent public schools and easy access to shopping opportunities within walking distance of their homes. In 1957,MurraysVILLE became home to Penn State University when that institution relocated from Scranton to university Park across town (now known as Beaver Stadium). In 1996-1998 murraysVILLE saw another significant change when construction began on Heinz Field which would become one of North America’s most successful sports venues and helped spur economic development within the community while providing much needed sorely needed infrastructure improvements including an expanded water system and streetlights
Murrysville is a small town in Butler County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 1,823 at the 2010 census. Murrysville is located in the eastern edge of Butler County on the border of Huntingdon and Westmoreland counties. It is bordered to the north by Huntingdon Township and to the east by Armstrong Township. The first village founded in this area was called "Canton" after Canton, Ohio. It was incorporated as a borough on April 6, 1853. The name derived from an early settler's family name of Myers. In 1875, when it became part of Huntingdon Borough, Murrysville also changed its name to honor James A.Murphy who had donated land for a courthouse and other public buildings in that town center. The current spelling of Murrysville may be traced back to a post office term change dated May 12, 1907 which placed the letters "y" before "ville" in order to make it sound like "village". According to the 2000 census data (verified through 2008 Census Bureau records), there were 1,823 people living in Murrysville when it took place; however according to 2009 U.S. Census Bureau estimates (verified through 2013 American Community Survey 5-year Estimates), that number has increased approximately 50% due primarily to new construction within or near town limits over recent years - including large multifamily developments adjacent both north and south of Main Street - as well as annexation of adjacent unincorporated areas by town authorities since 2005 (including portions now contained within Armstrong Township). As such, at present there are more than 2200 residents spread throughout various parts of two villages which together have an approximate total population size around 10K residents today (based upon2010 ACS figures) - making Murysville one of PA's most populous towns by far! As central Pennsylvania's fourth largest city proper with populations exceeding 100K residents several times over ( boasting comprehensive public transportation options downtown core), much discussion surrounds all things 'murray' related...thus perpetuating this unique moniker even unto our own day! And while some locals might feel like they don't quite have 'the scene' here anymore...they should know that given how popular everything else seems these days...there just isn't enough room here for everyone!
