The first settler in Munhall was Levi Coffin who arrived in 1753 from Pennsylvania. In 1827, John Ahern purchased land within the present-day town limits and set up a tannery. On July 1, 1871, Munhall became a township under Paxton Township form Carnegie County but it reverted to Crawford County on January 1, 1907 when that township became part of Butler County. In 1916, Munhall residents passed an ordinance creating the borough system with seven wards which were later increased to twelve wards by 1996 referendum. The Borough system continued through consolidation into Allegheny County in 2003 however it reverted back to borough form on April 15th, 2013 when all municipalities within Allegheny County were merged into one consolidated authority called “Allegheny City”

According to the United States Census Bureau, Munhall has a total area of , of which is land and is water. The first white settler in Munhall was George Hargrave in 1797. He built a cabin on the Susquehanna River near present-day downtown Munhall. The town began as a small community named Oxford Village in 1825 when two brothers, Oliver and Amos White, foundedOxford Township together with other settlers from Johnstown and Altoona. In 1847, Oxford Township became Huntingdon County and Munhall became its capital city. In 1933, Huntingdon County merged with Montgomery County to form Pennsylvania's third largest county by land area - larger than Philadelphia or Baltimore - and it remains one of the most populous counties in Pennsylvania today. In 1939, after much discussion among both county commissioners and residents about whether or not to name their new county after General George Washington (who had died three years earlier), voters overwhelmingly approved changing the name to "Munhall" in tribute to General Washington's birthplace on nearby Mount Vernon Place outside Johnstown. Many businesses within Monhall itself were started by military personnel stationed there during World War II - such as Armour & Co., Peddle Brothers Paper Mill (now known as Wright Paper Company), Sanger Rubber Company (now known as JBS USA), Sunoco Electric Service Station #2 (Now Verizon Wireless), Camp Hill Armory Ammunition Plant (Now Smith & Wesson) - all while war production was taking place nearby at Lackland Air Force Base across I-670 from town limits. Today Munhall is an agricultural center with many cereal farmers growing corn, wheat, soybeans and other crops; several poultry farmers raising chickens for eggs or meat; several timber producers harvesting lumber for homes; several metal manufacturers making products such as aluminum cans or hinges; numerous software companies that have set up shop here during wartime; numerous medical professionals who work out of various clinics located throughout Townships/Counties withinPennsylvania...most recently CVS Pharmacy having opened up shop on Main Street just south of Pittsburg Highway giving everyone great access right down front without going through huge drive thrus!
