The name “Munhall” comes from the German words for “a meadow in the forest.” For over 125 years, Munhall has been an important center for optical research and manufacturing. In 1945, Munhall became home to — and still contains — the United States Optics Laboratory (USOL). USOL is one of the most iconic and well-known institutions within optics research today. The history of optics research in Munhall began with Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz and Johann Friedrich Böhme. Both men were significant figures in early modern optics because they developed ideas that defined how lenses work and what light can be seen. Leibniz was responsible for developing the first true lens design, which allowed objects to be photographed without using long glasses or other optical devices. His invention also helped make vision possible through his theory of light waves. Böhme was also influential during this time period as he developed methods for creating transparent media such as glass and plastic that could be used to view images or videos. These advances would later lead to the development of digital image capture technology! Munhall, Pennsylvania is a small town in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. The population was 5,557 at the 2010 census. Munhall is home to the Munhall Mennonite Church and the nearby United Mennonite Church of Christ. It is also a center for agricultural production and manufacturing. The first people to live in what is now Munhall were German farmers who immigrated from Württemberg in 1814. The area that now constitutes Munhall was part of Lancaster County until 1792 when it became part of Whitemarsh Township. The first settler in what is now Munhall was Peter Halbach, who arrived on horseback in 1795. He founded a farm named Halbachsville which he sold to Johann Gottlieb Kapp and his family in 1802. There were several other early settlers including Jacob Beer (1793-1847), John Hildebrandt (1801-1861), David Friedrich Roth (1804-1868), George Wagner (1800-1875) and Abraham Funkhouser (1800-1885). In 1861, a group of Mennonites from Lancaster County formed the United Brethren Church under the leadership of James Buchanan MacKenzie Sr.. In 1874, they built their first church on land that they had bought from local landowners.. In 1907, they added an additional building to their collection which still stands today – the present day United Mennonite Church of Christ building. At this time there were about 120 members living inmunhall proper and 30 scattered throughout rural areas adjacent to it.. Munhall was founded in 1798 and named for Captain John Munhall of the British army who fought in the American Revolution. It became a borough in 1892. The borough was merged with Clearfield Township on July 1, 1999. The first settler in Munhall was John Purdy who arrived in 1798 and laid out a tract of land on what is now Main Street. He built his home on the west side of town and named it "Munhall". From this location Sergeant James McKinney took his morning ride to pick up corn from farmers around town for meal that he would later sell to consumers at nightfall. Captain John Munhall fought during the Revolutionary War and received an honorable discharge from the British military after being shot through both legs near Monongahela River Bridge on September 12, 1775 while support troops were fighting against General George Washington's forces at Yorktown, Virginia In 1802 Captain John Buncombe purchased some additional land along Main Street which he used as pastureland for his cows while also constructing a log cabin known as "Bunin's House". On December 5th, 1802 Edward Buncombe married Sarah Cook and they moved into their new home which still stands today - she called it "Cook's Cabin" - located east of present-day Main Street between Second Avenue (now State Route 309) and Third Avenue (now State Route 6). In 1803 Captain John Buncombe established himself as a justice of peace with jurisdiction over all township lands within its borders save those lying northwardly of Lancaster Pike/Shawnee Road/Pennsylvania Route 451 (then Cumberland Road). In 1806 he sold most of his holdings including Cook's Cabin to Captn Samuel Silliman who continued to live there until his death March 3rd, 1865 when it passed back to Sarah Cook via her daughter Anna Cook Shuman In 1807 Captn Samuel Silliman organized what is now known as "The First Presbyterian Church" which served as their meeting place until 1830 when they relocated to one of three buildings erected by Colonel William Penn - also known as "The Old Palace" - inside what are now White Flint Township boundaries northeast of downtown Munhall Sarah Cook Shuman operated this church under various names until 1840 when she founded Stemmons Chapel adjacent to her original home which remained operational until 1850 On November 2nd 1800 Major Thomas Telford arrived at Fort Mifflin with 10 men following a march from Gettysburg where they had been engaged against Confederate forces led by General Robert Ewell At Knoxville Tennessee they found supplies necessary for their campaign so they set off without news or reinforcements Mexican Brigadier General Antonio Lopez sent them word asking if anyone knew where Major Telford might be living since he bore no arms but only wore civilian clothes Telford had become something of an celebrity among Alumni Association members due to his participation in campaigns such as Battle Of Gettysburg leading militia units against Confederate forces
