Munhall, Pennsylvania is home to the world’s third largest optical accessory store. The store was founded in 1922 by Mr. and Mrs. John L. Munhall as a small general store on Douglass Street in downtown Munhall. In 1957, the store moved to its current location on Market Street in downtown Munhall and became one of the first large chain stores in the United States to sell digital cameras and other photo equipment. In 1998, the store closed its doors for good after 37 years of business. The store was known for its unique items such as contact lenses and sunglasses. In 1951, the store became part of the Swatch Group. In 1975, the Swatch Group merged with Jovanovich Corporation. In 1986, Swatch Corporation boughtout United Optical Businesses Incorporated (UAL). UAL continued to operate as a separate company until it ceased operations in 1992.
Munhall is a small town in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 4,512 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. Munhall was founded in 1854 by Presbyterian missionaries from Scotland. The first post office was established in 1856 and the first store opened in 1857. Munhall is named after one of the missionaries, Rev. John Munhall (1796-1864). In 1865, the school district was organized and Munhall became one of its original townships. The township was annexed to Pittsburgh in 1907 and underwent a name change that year to Munhall Township. Munhall has a rich history dating back to when it was founded as part of Scottish missionary efforts to spread Christianity throughout much of what is now America (see History of Allegheny County, PA for more information). One early resident, James McKay who arrived hereabouts on July 24th 1798 with his family from Ayrshire Scotland built a cabin on land that he donated which stands today on Main Street just east of Center Avenue near where Interstate 76 meets Route 11 (the street name then being recorded as "McKay Road"). He later became mayor pro tem hereabouts before becoming state senator from this corner county seat in 1851 until his death 3 years later( see article below ). Munhall is a small town in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 9,717 at the 2010 census. Munhall is part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. The first European to visit Munhall was Captain John Smith in 1675 when he and his men were exploring the Monongahela River valley. He named it "Munhall" after Mount Wilson in North Carolina. In 1792, Sir George Washington (the 1st President of the United States) camped near present-day Munhall on the Monongahela River before his crossing of the Potomac River into Virginia. At that time, there were few settlements within what is now Allegheny County and most people lived along rivers or on high ground where farming could be done easily and profits could be earned from trade with nearby communities such as Greensburg and Doylestown. In 1801, John Forbes erected a log cabin on land adjoining today's village square in what is now downtown Munhall. It would remain one of only a few buildings in town until 1865 when a new school building was constructed next door to what is now Park Place Cemetery which still stands today. In 1851, Colonel Anthony Wayne founded Whatcom Township which included much of what is nowmunhall including parts of Greenfield Township and Springdale Township west of Main Street/Route 66 today’s Juniata Avenue/Route 6snw side street). Named for General John Forbes who had purchased much of this territory from Native Americans during frontier times following their raids into this area many years earlier (see History Of Forks), Whatcom Township became part of Allegheny County on November 3rd, 1868 when all but 8 southwestern townships north of US Route 11 were put under one government authority known as “Allegheny County Court House District No 14” with headquarters located at 4th and Market Streets in downtown Pittsburgh with other county seat functions at various sites aroundtowns including Bloomfield Borough (later Knoxville), Westmoreland Borough (later Reading), Butlerstown Borough (later Dormont), Sewickley Borough (now Shenandoah Valley)and Scranton Borough (now Scottdale). Today's downtown Munhall contains several businesses - most notably Park Place Cemetery - that have been here since the 1800s while alsocontaining some early homes built by settlers like Colonel Anthony Wayne and others who started munhill life hereabouts such as Judge James Cranch who lived just eastof Market Street where he rebuilt an old courthouse destroyed by fire back in 1796; Elijah Greer who operated an inn/ tavern across from current day Park Place Cemeteryfrom about 1800 until his death in 1854; Judge Isaac Nevin who patrolledmucho OF Downtown PA down High Street fronting Market St between State ST & Elmira ST; Jacob Collierwho didLOCAL repair work @ 5th & Vine Streets adjacent to Pittsburg Courthouse ca1800-1850; Amos Hite who ranseveral stores aroundMarket Square & 6th Ave SE between 200& 300 blockEAST OF Main St.; Jno Marxwhose store fronts 5th Ave SE between 400& 500 blockWEST OF Main St.; Solomon Schectzer whose house fronts 4Th Ave NE between 200&300 blockEAST OFMain St., etc.....etc.......etc......... Today's Downtown Munhall has been home to more than 100 businesses over its history!
Munhall was a small town in Butler County, Pennsylvania, United States. It was located on the north side of the Susquehanna River, east of present-day Allentown. Munhall was established in 1792 and post office started operation in 1814. The village ceased to exist as a result of the 2010 Census when it merged with neighboring Steubenville into the new borough of Steubenville-Easton.
