The first European settlers in what is now Munhall were French colonists who founded a trading post on the Monongahela River in 1724. In 1814, when General Alexander Hamilton's army invaded and captured Philadelphia, General James Butler took command of the Union army and ordered Butler's lieutenant-general to march through Munhall on his way to forced entry into Philadelphia. When Butler reached town he found that its inhabitants had successfully defended themselves against an attack by ten thousand militiamen fromPhiladelphia under Colonel John Armstrong. The community name "Munhall" may be derived from an early settler named Nicholas Hill (1740-1820). Hill built a log cabin near present day Munhall in 1786 and named it "Munhall". He also developed land north of town which became known as "Hillstown". The first store opened in 1826 within walking distance of today's downtownmunhall commercial district

Munhall is a small town in Berks County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 3,711 at the 2010 census. Munhall is the second most populous municipality in Berks County after Reading. The first settler in what is now Munhall was John Gorman who arrived during the early 17th century and platted what would become the town of Munhall on November 15, 1684. The name "Munhall" likely comes from a Cornish word meaning "hillock." It was probably given to the site by local Indians because it had an excellent view of all around it and offered good grazing for their cattle. In 1824, James J. Buchanan donated land to build a school in honor of his recently deceased father-in-law Alexander McNaught (1786–1872). The new school building was built on land that once belonged to Abraham Lincoln (1809–1865). In 1906, part of what is now downtown Munhall were destroyed by a fire that burned for three days. Many businesses located near Mulhall's busy Main Street were also damaged or destroyed in that blaze which left over 30 people dead and $3 million damage. In 1909, another devastating fire caused extensive damage to many homes and businesses near downtown Munhall while also leaving more than 40 people dead and $10 millionDamage done to both buildings makes this one of Pennsylvania's worst fires ever recorded; however arson charges were not brought against any individuals as no evidence could be found linking anyone with the fire directly or indirectly. In 1974, part of downtownmunhall were demolished when two concrete bridges connecting nearby neighborhoods collapsed due to age and rot; this event caused much traffic congestion within downtownmunhalldomittingtheopportunitytowalkable portionsoftown centre without fear of getting lost or having to cross streets that led nowhere
