Today, Munhall retains its small-town feel with a strong sense of community pride that has helped it remain one of Susquehanna County's most thriving towns despite recent economic challenges. Munhall is a town in Fayette County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 1,813 at the 2010 census. Munhall was founded in 1786 and incorporated as a borough in 1834. It became a village in 1881. In the 1970s, Munhall began to experience a rapid growth due to its location on the Susquehanna River and its close proximity to Harrisburg. The industry that has been staple of Munhall for many years now has diminished, but it retains some significance as an agricultural center with large arms stores and other businesses.
Munhall was a small farming community located in the immediate area around what is now the city of Pittsburgh. The population of Munhall was about 350 people in 1810, and increased to about 1,000 by 1830. The first settler in what is now Munhall was John Stephenson. He built a cabin on the edge of a lick of land that he claimed as his own in 1797. The community continued to grow until it had a population of 2,500 by 1840. In 1847, the United States government purchased 2,500 acres (8 km2) east of present-day Munhall from John Stephenson for $5,000. This piece of land would become known as Fort Duquesne Creek Site No. 4. The fort served as part of military operations during the Mexican War and was also used as a base for American settlers laboring on the new frontier. In 1861, when President Abraham Lincoln called for volunteers to serve in the Confederate Army during the American Civil War, some citizens in Munhall chose not to fight and registered with Pennsylvania Governor Edward Everett Ellery's Union army instead. As a result, much important business within Munhall came under Northern control during this time period; such activities included shipping goods out to General Robert Ewing's forces at Fort Monmouth on Delaware River Beach outside Philadelphia Harbor and receiving supplies from there before returning home across Allegheny Mountains into Western Pennsylvania via Valley Forge Arsenal near Butlertown junction where river travel became impeded due to snowmelt events caused by winter weather conditions over much of central PA.) After being evacuated from Fort Monmouth due to Union troops marching into town without orders following their victorious battle against Confederate forces at Harpers Ferry on July 14th 1865 - many residents returned home through Valley Forge Arsenal including Majority Owner John Dolan who along with his family ran munitions manufacturing plants there until 1869 when production stopped because technologies changed so rapidly - Armory employees were laid off less than one year later but kept their jobs thanks to an act passed by Congress authoring "The National Defense Act" which guaranteed employment benefits for discharged veteran Soldiers/Airmen
