Monroeville was first settled by pioneers in 1795. The name "Monroeville" comes from James Monroe, who surveyed and laid out the town site in 1802. The community was originally called Beech Bottom because of its plentiful beech trees. In 1848, a post office was established in the small settlement of Beech Bottom; however, it did not take off and no mail arrived from Monroeville until 1861. The first mill on the Monongahela River operated here in 1828-30. A second mill followed suit in 1830-32 and still operates today as Keystone Mill #2 (formerly known as Keystone Paper Company). In 1840, William Bradford built a log cabin here which served as his home for many years until he moved to nearby Butlerburg Township and erected a larger cabin there. In 1850, John Smeaton founded what became known as Smeaton's Store on Main Street; this store proved to be an important early market center for local farmers and merchants who trade with settlers throughout western Pennsylvania and eastern Ohio during that time period. In 1860, following the American Civil War, Union troops burned down much of downtown Monroeville – including most of Smeaton's Store – but some buildings were saved and used for various purposes until they finally burned down again around 1970-71 due to lack of maintenance or attention over time. After annexation by Pittsburgh in 1907 saw increased development within town boundaries; monorail service began running through town limits on July 1st 1912 along route 442A (now US 412) providing easy transportation into downtown Pittsburgh via those well-maintained streetscape facilities that had long been enjoyed by citizens of both towns together since their incorporation! Monroeville, Pennsylvania is a small town located in Fayette County, Pennsylvania. The population was 1,492 at the 2010 census. Monroeville is one of the oldest towns in Fayette County and has been inhabited since 1784. It was chartered on April 12, 1784 as part of the township of Bellefontaine. The original name for Monroeville was Prospect Hill Township (later Bellefontaine Township). In 1892, it changed its name to Monroeville because of its location adjacent to Montravision Lake. The first settler in Monroeville were Major John Monroe and his wife Sarah who arrived in May 1784 from Virginia. They built a log cabin on the south side of Prospect Hill Road which served as their home until they sold it to George Washington Poston in 1802. He and his family lived there until he died in 1805. His widow purchased the cabin from Poston's son-in-law Daniel Drake for $2700 dollars which she used as her home until her death in 1836. In 1806, Quaker Ebenezer Dickinson moved into what is now known as Dickinson House about two miles east of today's town center on the north side of Prospect Hill Road between Centre and Summit Roads (now US 916). Ebenezer Dickinson was an early settler here and had two children by his first wife Rebecca: Ezekiel Ira Dickinson and Zilpah Elizabeth Dickinson (1807–1893). Their father also founded East Penn Mutual Insurance Company here which still exists today with over $100 billion worth of assets under management. In 1850, Amos Kendall settled near what is now either east orwest corner Main Street/Route 219 intersection just north of where Ballston Spa Road now stands - this area would become known as Kendall Square today . Amish settlers soon followed and named their farm “Kendall” after Amos Kendall himself – another early settler here! In 1865, James Minton bought 3 acres northeast corner Main Street/Route 219 intersection from prominent lawyer Levi Richardson for just $5 – making this area then called “Minton Square”! Indeed it would be years before any other development happened hereabouts – except for a few scattered homesites dotted around these bounds throughout the years! By 1870 there were only six or seven residences left standing within present day Monroeville limits! Thank goodness those days are long gone… Development really did not begin until after WWII when several new subdivisions were established throughout central & southern portions of Fayette County following World War II growth!!
