Monroeville is a small town in Butler County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 2,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Philadelphia-Camden-Wilmington Combined Statistical Area. Monroeville is located on the southern edge of Butler County and is bordered by Lebanon to the east, West Chester to the north, and University Park to the west. The borough of Monroeville was created from parts of West Chester Township in 1881. The first settlers were mostly loggers who came downriver from New York City looking for rich coal seams that lay below their properties. By 1884 there were only a few handful of residents living in what would become Monroeville Borough. Until recently, Monroeville was known as "the flowertown" because many people here grew flowers for sale or display during season (e.g., jonquils, lilies). Today much of what makes Monroeville unique has been built up around its two public schools and its dense concentration of businesses and residences along William Penn Parkway (formerly PA Route 132). One interesting fact about Monroeville: it's home to one of only two indoor ski slopes in Pennsylvania (the other being Whitemarsh Resort & Spa outside Harrisburg). He developed what is now known as the "Custer Mount" which featured four rubber shock absorbers that prevented movement of the rifle's barrel while it was being focused by either an eyepiece (or camera) or telescopic sight system. Monroeville is a small town in Perry County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. Monroeville was founded on February 16, 1787 by John Monro and his wife Sarah Monro. The first post office in Monroeville was established on March 3, 1787. In 1814, when the Ohio Territory was created from parts of Virginia and Kentucky, monROEVILLE became one of its largest settlements within that territory. In 1827 it had a population of 2,500; by 1850 it had increased to 5,000. The village's growth accelerated after the untimely death ofimerica merchant James Wirtz in 1853 and the ensuing gold rush that followed in nearby Colorado City and Silverton. By 1860 Monroeville had 10 saloons and 120 residents; by 1870 it boasted 100 businesses with a combined payroll over $1 million annually. As eastern Pennsylvania grew into an industrial center during the late 19th century thanks to railroad construction (the first such line being built through western PA), so too didmonROEVILLE's economy as more people moved there to work in burgeoning mills and factories throughout central PA and southeastern PA (including Altoona). Even though many of these companies closed down or went out of business during World War I due to shifts in technology ( Americans turned their attention instead to munitions production), economic growth continued until the early 1920s when restrictions on public employment led to a decline in manufacturing jobs throughout central PA while new businesses mushroomed elsewhere in what would become known as "the Steel Belt." The heyday of monROEVILLE came after World War II as postwar baby boomers arrivedseeking good-paying jobs right along with advancements made in technology which led increasingly large companies like GEICO to locate here – initially for truckdriving but eventually for other blue-collar positions as well including engineering support staff at Aluminum Company of America plants across central/southeastern PA until roughly 1970 when those same plants were shuttered following advances made in automated equipment manufacture which undercut demand for labor along with other economic changes brought about by automation
Monroeville was founded in 1781 by Daniel Monroe, an American Revolutionary War soldier and Loyalist. The community developed around the mercantile district of Monroeville Township. In 1812, the township was consolidated with the neighboring townships of Westmoreland and Perry to form Perry Township. By 1860, Monroeville had a population of 511 people. In 1868, the Pennsylvania Railroad became part of the North Central Railroad and Monroeville lost its railroad connection. In 1900, Monroeville had a population of 1,853 people. In 1940, it became a borough within Philadelphia County. As Philadelphia's largest borough by population at that time, it was served by two mayors: Edward Robinson (1940-1945) and James Molyneaux (1945-1950).
