The Monroeville post office was first established on November 3, 1795, and became a national center for mail delivery. The name "Monroeville" comes from John Monroe, an American Revolutionary War general. The Erie Canal ran through the town until 1825 when it was decommissioned and replaced by the Susquehanna River as the main transportation artery in what is now southeastern Pennsylvania. The towns of Monroeville and Prospect Heights were merged to form one municipality on November 14, 1907. The name reverted back to its original form on January 1, 1912 when both municipalities again separated into individual townships. According to the 2000 census, there are 5 businesses in Monroeville with over $100K in sales: Subway sandwich shop (closed), Dunkin' Donuts (closed), Gouda cheese store (closed), Jiffy Lube(closed), and Lowe's Home Improvement(closed). There are also three churches - Stokes Methodist Episcopal Church (founded 1895), First Baptist Church (founded 1868) and Presbyterianism's Second Parish Church (founded 1841).

The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. The area that became Monroeville was first settled by Europeans in 1795. His name comes from Frenchmans who had come to this region before that time. In 1827, John Monroe bought 3/8ths of section 6 near present-day Monroeville for $1,500. On December 12th, 1827 he erected a two-story wooden frame house on this tract as his home and office. This early settler built one of the earliest schools in this part of the country which he called "the Academy." In 1844 Isaac Asbury Addison founded what is now known as The Baptist Church here in Monroeville and it has been serving God's people ever since! Addison donated land for this church and also started construction on what is now the foundation stone for the current building. The congregation grew rapidly after its establishment and soon needed an larger meeting hall so they organized a drive to collect money to build one. They managed to raise over $6,000! To date their efforts have funded 10 churches throughout western PA! Many famous Americans were born or raised here including: Andrew Johnson (President), James Garfield (President), Woodrow Wilson (First Lady), Franklin D Roosevelt (Second Lady), Neil Armstrong (NASA astronaut)and more! Some notable residents include: US Senator Robert Byrd; Congressman Tom Marino; Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia; Drs Tim Buckley & Marty Nesbit; actor Kevin Bacon
