Monroeville was a small town in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, United States, until the early 21st century. It is located in the eastern part of the county and is about east of Pittsburgh. The population was 3,851 at the 2010 census. The first known permanent settler in Monroeville was John Monroe who came to what is now Monroeville in 1799. He built a log cabin on what is now Main Street. In 1818, he married Susannah Brown and they started a family. They were soon followed by their two children: James (1819-1893) and Sarah (1821-1892). John Monroe's son James went into business with his father and became one of the largest landowners in southwestern Pennsylvania. He also served as mayor of Monroeville from 1871 to 1893; he was an Independent Democrat. Sarah Monroe had two daughters: Emma (born 1824) and Jennie (born 1830). After her husband's death in 1841, she raised her daughters alone until 1861 when she married George Washington Carver Jr., Sr.. They lived for many years at 58th & Park Streets in Pittsburgh before moving to their present home at 20 S Jackson Ave.,Monroeville on October 15th, 1916 after his death there from a heart attack caused by polio
