Monroeville, Pennsylvania is a small town located in the western reaches of the U.S. state of Pennsylvania. It is bordered by Armstrong County to the south and west, Huntingdon County to the north and east, and Luzerne County to the northwest. As of the 2010 census, Monroeville had a population of 656 people. The area that would become Monroeville was first settled by English colonists in 1747 as part of what is now Armstrong County. The town was founded on July 4, 1794 as part of what is now Huntingdon County. In 1812, Monroeville became a part of Allegheny County and remained so until it became an independent municipality in 1907. The name "Monroeville" comes from Nicholas Monroe, who arrived in North America in 1684 with his family and purchased land near present-day Monroeville Township on November 14th, 1748 from Captain John Butler for $5 per acre (2/3 share). On October 5th following his arrival, he erected a frame house on this land which served as the first meeting place for settlers in what would become Monroeville Township (now Armstrong) PA.. The first post office called "Monroeville" was established in December 1748 under government orders shortly after Captain Butler's purchase. It operated out ofCaptain Butler's house until February 2nd when it moved to its current location at 214 Main Street where it continued operations until 1824 when it amalgamated with neighboring Township to form new Mechanicsburg Township PA.. In 1812 Cumberland county was created from parts of Allegheny and Chester counties and included much of what are now Armstrong and Montgomery counties including Monroeville township; however Armstrong township did not join Cumberland county until 1907 when it merged with Mechanicsburg township forming one consolidated entity known today as MonROEVILLE PA.. In 1840 Nicholas Brothers opened up a tannery here which still operates today producing hides for clothing making monte Carlo wine available for public consumption during prohibition days; however this business closed down around 1920 due to over production caused by large influxes of immigrants into rural areas during this time period Many residents also left during this time period for better opportunities found elsewhere throughout America; however many Nicoloses still remain living here today descendants continue working at their tannery together with their wives products are produced nearby .
