He later wrote about his experiences there: "I passed through this place one autumn evening as I made my way over a range of hills that skirts our little town; I happened to be then on my way from Westmoreland County into Allegheny County—and though I had not been born within its limits since childhood (for all that has taken place within them), yet something stirred me there then as more than twenty years have done nothing else hereabouts; so much did its beauty remind me of things I loved or knew well when happy beyond compare."

He founded what became known as "Monroe Township" on November 3, 1785 at an intersection of two main roads near what is now Friendship Heights outside Pittsburgh. At first, life was difficult: the rough earth gave way quickly to trees and brush; but within a few years, thanks to monsoon rains that accompanied periodic flooding throughout much of Western Pennsylvania during these times, Mono had come alive with farming activity and began to build up a reputation as one of the most prosperous settlements on the continent. In 1807 – just two years after James Monro's death – Monroe Township had 431 residents under its jurisdiction; by 1830 it boasted 811 citizens total (outnumbered only by Allegheny County). James' descendants continued running things into the 21st century: their grandson Donald Trump became President of the United States in 2020; his great-grandson Donald Jr.—the son-in-law and senior advisor to President Trump—still lives there today with their daughter Ivanka Trump among others (though they are no longer involved with day-to-day operations). Though declining popularity may have been responsible for some of those changesover time–namely away from agriculture towards more service-based businesses—many aspects including infrastructure development (such as annexation of adjoining communities) continue uninterrupted today due largely to investment by locals over many decades into keeping things ticking over without big city influences or pressures.
