Meadville is a small town in Potter County, Pennsylvania, United States. Meadville was founded on the Delaware River in 1768 by John Mead and his wife Susanna. The city was named for John's brother-in-law, William Mead. The population of Meadville was 1,045 at the 2000 census. In 1814, General James K. Polk and his army invaded Potter County to suppress a slave uprising in that county led by Elijah Muhammad. Aftermath of the Battle of Gettysburg ended the civil war in America and caused an influx of refugees into Potter County. In 1828, Meadville became part of what would become Pittsburgh. However, when Pittsburgh annexed Meadville in 1847 it reverted back to its original name: "Meadville." The first post office at MeadVILLE was established on July 10, 1800 (or possibly earlier). It operated under the name "New Providence". On January 1st, 1817 (or perhaps earlier), Arthur Heiman opened a store at which he sold goods from Independence Hall on Market Square across from present day Conshohocken High School; later known as Heiman's Drug Store and still operates today as a grocery store/deli with over 100 employees inside and out! One can only imagine how trading took place before Pennsylvanian statehood! For many years this store served as one of the few convenient stops for travelers along Route 30A between Harrisburg and strutting Yorktown Heights - now part of Lower Merion Township! The Heiman family also built a schoolhouse near today's intersection of West Friendship Road (just south of Conshohocken) which functioned as both their business headquarters during school days AND their home during weekends until it burned down in 1922! Today we see evidence OF this building next door - there are remnants of two walls & some brick steps leading up to what once housed THE PARKING LOT FOR MARTIN LUKENS' CONSTRUCTION BOUTIQUE - now home to STRAWBERRY FIELD DAYS AVE!!! You get lost trying to find your way around these streets anymore... you're lucky if you get 25 feet past where YOU STAND before finding another landmark! So much has changed since then... but so too has our community!!
