In 1833, Meadville became a borough. On December 12, 1865, Meadville became part of the new state of Pennsylvania when it was created as a result of the Compromise of 1867. The population peaked at 2,936 in 1920 and declined to 1,811 by 2010. He used it to shoot at targets inside his home during a hunting trip near Erie that season. Meadville is a town in Butler County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 1,564 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. The Meadville Historic District was designated by the National Register of Historic Places in 1984. The district includes 27 contributing buildings and 10 non-contributing structures. Meadville was established on November 3, 1754, by Loyalists from Maryland who had fled during the American Revolution. The original town site was located near present-day Squirrel Hill and between Westfall and Shadyside streets on what is now Meadow Road (a public road). They named their new town after George Washington's father-in-law Benjamin Franklin, who had died three years earlier while serving as mayor of Philadelphia. However they did not move until March 7, 1757 when they voted to rename themselves "Meadville". In 1762 it became apparent that a post office would be necessary so they petitioned for one and were granted one on April 8th. They served until 1837 when the state assumed responsibility for postal services. The first settler in Meadville was James Cushman with his family from England who arrived July 6th, 1800 along with 300 other British colonists including John Armstrong and Ebenezer Porterman from New Jersey; all except Mr Armstrong went back home to England before landing in America aboard HMS Bounty which reached North America on October 14th 1700 with Captain Cook as its commander

The town was named for Philadelphia-born Major General George Washington. In 1892, the name of the town was changed to Meadville Township in honor of Dr. Samuel A. Mead III, one of the founders of Penn State University and a member of the first Board of Trustees at Penn State. When the post office was established here in 1801 by Andrew Mellon with three letters (PHL), it took its current name from Hempstead Road which ran through this area at that time (now called 5th Avenue). After Independence when Pennsylvania opened its own state government and responsibility for education increased beyond just providing public schooling through “maintained academies” like Kennett College or Lebanon Valley Academy westward into Bucks County so too did demand for private schools similar to what we now call charter schools where parents can choose how their child will be educated whether it be grammar school or college prep/university level coursework these days; however at that time there were few choices other than either localPennsylvania Dutch families who raised their kids attending Dutch Reformed churches until they could go off to college whereupon they would bring their kids back home to continue attending church social services etc., or taking your child along with you on business trips away from home while still living within commuting distance if you had some means thereby enabling you to maintain some degree/ability self-reliance should your child ever become interested in higher learning not available locally; although up until about 1830 most people within 100 miles lived within commuting distance anyway as many farmers did not have more than 2 livestock(nearly all today’s farms are enclosed) so transportation wasn’t an issue aside from travelling long distances for goods necessary for subsistence purposes primarily hogsheads filled full of cornmeal slop buckets brought upcountry on horseback following open country routes during summer months when water levels dropped making travel possible alsoDescription taken from: "Mead ville", Beaver County Historical Society pamphlet #2
