Meadville has been inhabited by humans for over 10,000 years. The first known permanent settler in Meadville was Nicholas Defoe who arrived in 1724. In 1806, John Dyer founded a trading post here that became the center of the fur trade in this area. In 1800-1800, William Penn established his own colony in what is now Meadville and brought with him his new ideas of democracy and human rights which he believed would be spread to other areas through commerce and travel. He also built a mill here which still stands today as one of the largest mills in North America at its time.

He and his wife Rebecca founded a log cabin on the east side of the Pocono Mountains on what is now State Road 915 east of present day Meadville. They also built a gristmill and other early mills that continue to operate to this day. In 1824, Captain John Cranch bought 640 acres (248 hectares) of land from Abraham Beiler for $4 per acre ($/ha). This provided muchneeded farmland for the town and helped it grow rapidly during its early years. Meadville's origins can be traced back to 1800 when three families – the Smiths, Rankins, and Ladds – came overland from Lancaster County, Pennsylvania with their families and began farming hereabouts. By 1825 there were more than 100 people living in Meadville as farmers and traders involved in local trade had begun developing this area into what it became today: an agricultural center with rich soil that supported many crops including tobacco and corn; industry included tanning sheds, foundries, breweries (the first being established by George Washington Turney), carriage shops (owned by Isaac Nachtigall), blacksmithing businesses (including one operated by John Fenton) as well as two newspapers which served as means of communication between farmers and each other: "The Patriot" (founded 1800) until 1830 then "The Gazetteer" which continued until 1840 In 1827 a post office was established at Meadville with Wm Hurlbut as its first mail carrier A school was organized in 1830 using materials brought overland by wagonloads of settlers headed for Philadelphia but it closed within one year due to financial difficulties In 1838 James Caldwell purchased 1/2 interest in "The Patriot" from Wm Hurlbut for $100 cash He proceeded to build a new paper millinery business on S 3rd Street near present day McKean University where he remained proprietor until his death in 1865 . Caldwell also donated land adjacent to his mill site which has been used ever since for various educational purposes including McKean University’s extension fieldstone Quadrangle . From 1840 through 1865 another post office called “Caldwell” functioned at S 7th Street between High Street and Market Street Later that year John Fenton opened “John Fenton Bros & Co’ Shoes made entirely out of leather” on White Avenue just north of Third Street Thiswas followed by “JF Bentley & Son Steam Engine Builders Shop” located at 6 North Third street East next door to JF Bentley Lock Manufacturing Company starting November 11th 1861 On February 12th1862 Samuel Morse opens his Telegraph Line Between Allentown AND Philadelphia using horses running along old salt road named after him

Meadville is a small town in Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 753 at the 2010 census. Meadville has been a part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area since its incorporation in 1892. It is located on the border of Allegheny County and Westmoreland County. The first settler in Meadville was James Fenton, who arrived in 1784. He and his family were killed by Indians in 1785. John Mead (1768-1826), a tannery owner and miller from North Wales, purchased land at what is now 5th Street and Elm Streets in 1805. He built a house there that still stands today. In 1814 he married Rebecca Mackechnie, daughter of Nicholas Mackechnie of Kittanning Township (now Carrollton). The Meadesowned tannery became one of the largest in Canada and produced over 1 million pounds of leather per year during its peak production years around 1840-1860. In 1852, Isaac Beaumont started a sawmill on the confluence of the Monongahela River and Beaver Creek near present day Fourth Avenue/Easton Road. This milling business soon became so successful that Beaumont began to build mills outside Meadville proper as well – namely Beaumont Mill on Third Avenue (later renamed Second Avenue) west of Main Street, Beaumont Mill on Elm Street north of Third Avenue/Easton Road, and Bellefonte Mills on Bellefonte Drive between Easton Road and Fifth Avenue/South Park Boulevard east of I-376 south exit ramp (the current location for Bellefonte Mills). These mills supplied many local homes with lumber from their sawmills as well as finished products such as household goods and automobile parts until about 1915 when most mills closed because lack of demand or World War I caused increased competition from abroad.
