The first settler in this area was John Mead who established a farm on the eastern border of what is now Meadville in 1796. In 1824, Isaac Goodrich erected a log cabin on the same site as the current structure which still stands today. In 1826, James Ladd bought land from Abraham White and erected a house on this property which still stands today. In 1830, John Forbes purchased land from James Ladd and built a store on what is now Market Street. This store later became known as the Forbes House which housed the local post office until it was discontinued in 1954. In 1835, John Gossett moved to Meadville from Scranton and commenced farming here with his son Amos Gossett Jr.. They also founded the first school here which opened in 1836-37. By 1840, Meadville had become an important community with several businesses including a bakery (owned by Elijah Stout), blacksmith shop (owned by Jacob Welsh), groceries (owned by Daniel Toombs), dry goods store (owned by George Wickersham) and cheese factory (operated by Nicholas Beattie). The first train passing through this locality arrived at Meadville Depot on October 9th, 1847; it was brought overland from Philadelphia via Bucks County The peak of traffic for these businesses occurred during World War II when demand for goods items such as flour increased due to rationing restrictions set forth by Franklin D Roosevelt's New Deal program
