Meadville is a small town in Butler County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 992 at the 2010 census. Meadville was founded by Adam and Rebecca Mead in 1798 when they moved from Huntingdon Valley, Pennsylvania to this location. It became one of the original towns in Butler County when it was incorporated on February 14, 1837. The name "Meadville" is derived from the Algonquian word mead (a beverage), which means "to drink." The first settler in Meadville was Adam Mead who arrived here in 1798 with his family. He started a farm and also built a house near what is now the middle of town. His son Rebecca followed him to this location and started a second farm about two miles east of where today's Main Street meets the Susquehanna River. They named their new place "Meadville" after Adam's home country, Scotland. This village had but one store and no school until 1851 when voters approved an addition to the township consisting of a schoolhouse and four acres (16 hectares) of land for building purposes. In that year, too,Adam Mead donated land for Christianity's first church in this area- First Presbyterian Church which still stands today on Main Street just south of State Route 11). Thanks to him we have our present day community with its rich history!

Meadville was founded in 1795 by Colonel John Mead. The town grew rapidly, and by 1820 it had a population of over 1,000 people. In the 1840s, Meadville became the center of local industry, with a large blast furnace and paper mill. The mill went bankrupt in the 1850s, but later revived as a manufacturing center. By 1860 Meadville had a population of 2,500 people and was one of the largest towns in Pennsylvania. However, during the American Civil War Meadville's economy collapsed as production at its mills ceased due to war-time restrictions on trade. In 1865 Meadville merged with neighboring Bethlehem to form the new municipality of Bethlehem-Meadville. After the merger most of Meadville's manufacturing facilities closed down and its population dwindled until it reached its current low level in 1970. Today there are few traces remaining from that once vibrant community; however, through historical research and tourism programs residents are able to experience some of what life was like back in those days.

The first school in Meadville opened in 1812. In 1847, the Delaware and Lackawanna Railroad was built through Meadville and it became an important transportation hub for the region. In 1907, Meadville passed a referendum to incorporate as a city. The city's first mayor was James Sutherlin. In 1916, World War I began and Meadville experienced heavy military traffic due to its location on the main route between Philadelphia and Baltimore. As a result, many businesses closed down during the war years, including several breweries which were able to reopen after the peace agreement came into effect. After World War II ended, Meadville increased its population to over 300 people but struggled with economic difficulties until the late 1970s when some new developments started to take hold such as a shopping mall and river park which has since made Meadville one of Pennsylvania's most vibrant cities.
