Meadville is located east of the University of Pittsburgh campus and north of the city of Pittsburgh. It is bordered by the boroughs of Allentown to its south and Squirrel Hill to its west. Meadville was founded in 1824 as a small community on the side of a hill near what is now Oakland Cemetery. According to the United States Census Bureau, Meadville has a total area of 0.8 square miles (2 km²), all of it land. As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 1,269 people, 476 households, and 338 families residing in the borough. The population density was 922/square mile (351/km²). There were 515 housing units at an average densityof 353/sq mi (138/km²). The racial makeup ofthe borough was 98% White, 0% African American, 0% Native American, 2% Asian, and 1% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino Of any race were 3%. There were 476 households out OF which 31% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 61% were married couples living together, 10% had a female householder with no husband present, and 19% were non-families. 15%of ALL households were made up OF individuals and 5% had someone who lived alone who was 65 years old or older. Meadville is a small town in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 1,544 at the 2010 census. Meadville was founded in 1787 by John Mead and his bride Susanna Thomson. The community was named for George Washington's birthplace of Mount Vernon, Virginia. Meadville is located in the Western Division of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area and is part of the Pittsburgh–Allentown–Easton, PA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The townships within Meadville are Northumberland Township (north), Westmoreland Township (west), Southwestern Township (southwest), and Monaca Township (south). The community rests upon a mix of agricultural land that has been used for farming since the early 1800s; however, heavy industry has played a significant role in its growth over time as well. Today's economy revolves around manufacturing: Checkerboard Manufacturing Company operates a factory here; Meadville-based American Weigh & Sway Corporation manufactures weights and measures; and two local businesses – Holy Cross Catholic Church and Recreation And Cultural Center – are home to several means of sustenance for their residents: a grocery store operated by an era-old family business called The Grocery Co., which also sells produce from nearby farms; and PNC Park, one of only three professional sports venues in Pennsylvania open to the public without charge to fans who park their cars near it. In 1801 Isaac Atkinson raised corn on his farmstead west of town while still living with his parents. By 1806 he had erected a frame water tower on what is now State Route 158 just east of town limits. In 1809 he built another frame tower on what is now US 58 just north of town limits. This gave him interests in both lands - he became known as "The Town Tower Builder" - until his death in 1836. He bequeathed both structures to civic leaders including first Presbyterian Bishop John Weir who conducted services there beginning on October 24th each year from then until 1865 when statehood made this activity taxable under state law In 1861 Isaac Atkinson's widow donated land east of town limits to establish Gettysburg National Military Park & Cemetery adjacent thereto honoring her husband’s memory along with other patriots killed during our Civil War
Meadville is a borough in and the seat of Meadville Township, in Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 1,073 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Scranton-Wilkes-Barre, PA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlement in present-day Meadville was made on the advice of Colonel John Forbes during 1799 by residents of Scotland who had immigrated to America. In 1813, General William Tecumseh Sherman's army passed through Meadville while on its march from Philadelphia to Pittsburgh and stopped at the small town for lunch. The following year, Congress created Meadville as a township within Lackawanna County with a land area of . In 1824, James Wirtz purchased 300 acres (120 hectares) east of present-day Meadville from Nicholas Dickson for $1 per acre (0.50 per kilometer). In 1830, Wirtz built his home at what is now known as Wirtz Hall. He became one of the earliest settlers in the town and developed it into an agricultural community that produced cornmeal and other crops until World War II when production shifted to manufacturing interests such as aluminum cans and trucks. Meadville was incorporated as a borough on November 5th, 1906; it changed its name to Meadville Township on February 14th, 1912 after becoming part of Scranton–Wilkes-Barre Borough effective that date. On July 1st 1969 it became part of Lackawanna County when all but two municipalities within Lackawanna County were merged into that county by order of then Governor Robert Pethone.
