Meadville is a town in Butler County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 1,912 at the 2010 census. Meadville is one of three towns in Butler County that are part of the Erie-Lehigh Valley Mega-City Corporation and have been combined since 2003. The first permanent settler in what is now Meadville was John Mead who arrived around 1795. He built a log cabin and store on the edge of what is now Main Street. The first post office was established in 1807 and was called "Meadville". In 1828, a road from Erie to Lehigh City passed through Meadville and began to be called "Main Street". The name change may have been because of the many mills located close by - one being Reading's Mill which produced flour for many years until it closed in 1892. The cherry orchard which still stands today near where Main Street meets US Route 22 also played an important role in early Meadville development. It began as a small plot of land that had trees grown for cherries by local farmers; however, it soon became known for its wildflowers which were sold at local markets across the United States. By 1860, over 100 acres (40 hectares) of orchards had been purchased by John Kline and his family permanently establishing Kline Orchards & Cherry Company Ltd., one of the first commercial tomato companies in America. In 1903, General Electric founded their plant here – one of the largest electrical plants ever built – with 522 employees manufacturing radios/TV sets/cables/electronics products including radios and TVs through 1962 when it moved to nearby Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Township before closing down completely in 2001 amidst economic decline throughout much of PA). After World War II ended there were few jobs available due to depletion during wartime production followed by increased competition from other states during peacetime as well as suburban growth throughout PA (manufacturing shifted away from rural areas towards larger cities). However some new businesses such as Wernher’s Ice Cream opened up after WWII while others such as Friendly Furniture disappeared during this time period leaving behind a large empty lot next to EHSL where today's building used to stand prior to demolition two years ago! One could argue about whether or not these businesses actually left town because they ceased operations long before state law allowed for relocations like this (note: even though these businesses stopped operating under present day laws they still remain buried within municipal property records!). By 1860, the population had reached 1,500 people. During the late 1800s and early 1900s, Meadville experienced a rapid growth rate due to its location on the railroads. In 1903, the Pennsylvania Railroad merged with the New York Central Railroad, which led to an increase in transportation jobs in Meadville. However, this growth stopped after World War I when railroads became monopolies. Today, Meadville is a small town with a limited number of residents that primarily depends on agriculture for income.
