By 1830, it had become an important transportation center for goods arriving by ship from points east and west along the Paxton River Valley. A canal was constructed through the town between 1840 and 1860 to bring water from Monongahela River near Greensburg upriver to be used by farmers and industry owners on the upper Susquehanna River Valley side of town; this canal helped spur economic development within town limits during the late 19th century but also contributed to its decline after World War II when automobile travel became more popular among residents. In 1868, John Drysdale founded Drysdale & Sons Brewing Company with his brother George Drysdale on a small lot behind what is now First Union Bank building (now known as Diamond's Department Store). Today, Drysdale & Sons Brewing Company is one of Pittsburg's oldest businesses still operating unchanged since its establishment over 150 years ago! In 1916, steel magnate Andrew Carnegie donated $5 million towards construction of Carnegie Library which opened its doors on November 16th, 1917! This downtown Carnegie library remains one ofPittsburgh's most iconic landmarks today!
