In 1786, Colonel John Armstrong of the Pennsylvania Line purchased 1,000 acres of land in what is now Mckeesport Township. He named the tract Armstrong's Grant and began to build a fortification on it. In 1792, Armstrong was made colonel of militia and began building Fort Necessity. The fort faced southwest from where present-day Union Market stands and had a ditch around it for defense against Indians. In 1814, the United States Congress passed an act authorizing General George Washington to arm and equip 500 men to garrison Fort Necessity. President James K. Polk also ordered that all Americans in Cuba be furnished with pepper spray should any Cuban insurgents attempt to cross into America. On October 5, 1846, during the Mexican–American War, American troops opened fire on a group of Mexicans who had taken refuge inside Fort Necessity. Eleven people were killed and twenty-one wounded by American firepower; this event became known as the Battle of Fort Necessity. The fortifications at Fort Necessity were abandoned in 1848 when Congress appropriated $10,000 for their removal. The site remained unoccupied until 1865 when it was used as a hospital for Confederate soldiers during the Civil Warrington massacre that took place nearpresent day Union Market
Mckeesport is a town in Mckeesport County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 2,831 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in what would become Mckeesport was Nicholas McGowan in 1799. He and his family camped on a hill above what is now called "the McGowan House". In 1815, John Potter established a small farm near present day McKeesport and named it Potter's Purchase after himself and James Potter, his brother-in-law. The Potters were among the earliest settlers in what would become McKeesport Township. In 1836, John Brownmore founded a gristmill on the confluence of the Monongahela and Allegheny Rivers. This mill became known as BrownMORE Mill & Lumber Company until 1885 when it was absorbed into Wernher Paper Company which still exists today as Wernher Paper Corporation. The erection of shops around this time led to McKeesports growth as an industrial center during the late 19th century with such businesses as Paintsville Cement Works (1893), Bellefontaine Foundry (1901), Bryant Hat Factory (1904), McKesson Cheese Works (1910), Allentown Rubber works (1920) and most notably DuPont’s Chemical plant located on current day Hill District Boulevard across from US Steel’s Shayne Plant where DuPont manufactured both gasoline and sodium hydroxide solutions for production purposes before those products were replaced by methylmercury compounds in 1907.) During World War II DuPont began producing plutonium for use in weapons but ceased operations because of concerns over radiation hazards; however their facilities continued to produce munitions until 1973 when all materials were destroyed by order of President Richard Nixon due to health concerns about plutonium release from nuclear sites). DuPont also operated an foundry that produced steel rebar for masonry construction until it closed in 1978; that same year saw the opening of FirstEnergy Independent Transmission Lines Inc., later known as FirstEnergy Corp., which connected several former Du Pont plants together forming one large transformer factory complex including two aluminum smelters – Alcoa's Antlers Smelter #1 (now part of Barrett Metal) and American Canning Co.'s Cannery No 4 – making McKeesports largest employer ever outside government employment.] Mkeedsport has experienced significant growth throughout its history due to its location adjacent to majorPittsburgh manufacturing facilities - principally Du Pont’s chemical plant - along with other industries such asauto parts manufacture Schaeffer Automotive Parts Incorporated]], textiles [Wernher Paper Corporation]], food processing [Allentown Rubber company], papermaking [BrownMORE Mill & Lumber company], metalworking [Paintsville Cement Works], rubber goods [Du Pont's Chemical plant]]. Mckeesport is a small town in Butler County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1794 by Captain John McIntire and his family. In 1821, it became the seat of Butler County. In 1828, General Andrew Jackson visited Mckeesport while he was campaigning for president and recommended that the town be named for him. In 1829, Lieutenant Colonel James Hays donated land to help build a jail and courthouse in Mckeesport. The first courthouse building was completed in 1830 and served as the county seat until 1850 when it moved to nearby Greencastle. The first school in Mckee-sport was built on what is now First Avenue between Second Street and Third Street in 1827-28. This common schoolhouse served grades K-4 until 1861 when an addition was made to allow students from fifth through eighth grade to attend school together from September through December term time. A new school building was erected on Third Street between East Market Avenue and Fifth Avenue in 1868 which served grades 5-8 until 1973 when it closed due to lack of funding. A new elementary/middle school building replaced the old one on East Market Avenue between Sixth Street and Seventh Street in 1974 which continues to servegrades 9-12 today with a high school annex opening on Eighth Street near Buchanan Boulevard (now Chestnut Boulevard) following the original plans of local businessmen Harry Wertheimer Jr., Edward Prendergast Sr., George Stultz & their son Harry Prendergast III who also developed McKeesport Township into an incorporated borough with its own government starting date of January 1, 1978; Borough status has been revoked by Act No.(2011). Today's municipality borders Butler County eastward along Chestnut Boulevard then southward along Buchanan Boulevard before turning westward once again towards Greene County; however community services are provided within boundaries set by Boroughhall including policing, fire protection, social services (elderly care, parks & recreation), waste collection & transportation within limits established by Act No.(2011). According to act number 2011 no action has been taken since incorporation regarding annexation or changes within Community Services Area boundaries making this an inactive borough
Mckeesport was founded in 1794 by Captain John McKee. The town was named for the nearby Monongahela River. In 1821, it became a county seat of Allegheny County. The population reached 10,000 in 1875 and peaked at 20,000 in 1920. However, since then the population has declined each successive decade. Today, the population is fewer than 1,500 people.
