Mckeesport, Pennsylvania is a small town located in the Lehigh Valley of Pennsylvania, about 20 miles north of Bethlehem. The population was 9,852 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Allentown- Bethlehem-Easton, PA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Mckeesport were Dutch traders and missionaries who called it "Mechelen". In 1681, a group of English settlers founded a trading post here and named it for their then patron saint - Michael (pronounced "michael"). They built a fort on the site which served as their main center of trade until they abandoned it in 1724. In 1764, John Forbes purchased 2,000 acres (10 km2) of land east of present-day Mckeeversport from Nicholas McGowan for £120 sterling. He began building a house here which he named Forbes Manor after himself and his wife – Lady Forbes. The town's first public school was opened in 1811. In 1868, when the Lehigh Valley Railroad was completed, McFeeansport became one of its stations. Steel production began there in 1905 and has continued ever since; steel products are still an important part of local economy today. In 1951, McFeeansport adopted its first fire code regulations which have been followed ever since by other municipalities across the United States following suit during that period. The current mayor is Rich Kappalardo with office starting on January 1st 2020
